Septemeber 28, 2022 (San Diego) - Steve Fisher, former San Diego State men’s basketball head coach and an Aztecs Hall of Fame inductee, will be the recipient of the 2022 San Diego Nice Guy of the Year award on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Nice Guys of San Diego’s 42nd Annual Nice Guy of the Year Gala.

Nice Guys of San Diego, Inc., which has been in existence since 1979, recognizes individuals’ contributions to the communities of San Diego in fulfilling the Nice Guys’ motto of “offering a hand up, not a handout.” The non-profit charitable organization was built around the idea of providing one-time, yet substantial, aid to families in need and serves the citizens of San Diego by providing assistance for them to get back on their feet. To date, Nice Guys of San Diego has made donations in excess of $21 million to individuals and families throughout San Diego County and half of the proceeds of the Oct. 1 event will go to Coach Fisher’s charity of choice, the ALS Association.

Turning a once moribund San Diego State men’s basketball program around, Coach Fisher led the Aztecs to a record 10 Mountain West conference titles, eight NCAA tournaments and 13 postseason appearances in his 18 seasons on The Mesa. But his contributions to the city did not end with transforming the Aztec men’s basketball program. He serves as a role model and mentor to the hundreds of student-athletes who were under his tutelage during his time as a coach and continues to stay involved in his former player lives to this day.

Retiring from the bench following the 2016-17 season, Coach Fisher has remained intimately involved in the San Diego State community and the community at large. As an ambassador for the Aztec Club, he is an integral part of SDSU Athletics’ capital campaigns, represents the university in local community events, and in general is San Diego State’s “everyday nice guy.” Since first setting foot on campus in 1999, he as been a constant and steadying force that has helped guide San Diego State to levels of success both on the field and in the community that are unprecedented in the university’s history.

Coach Fisher will be joining recent recipients of the Nice Guy of the Year Award, including San Diego Padres chairman Peter Seidler, notable philanthropist and San Diego State donor Conrad Prebys, as well as Doug Manchester, Ernest Rady among others.
