March 21, 2010 (El Cajon) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is working with Grossmont Union High School officials to notify students and faculty who may have been exposed to a Granite Hills High School student who has been diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB). The student last attended classes on March 8 and officials have notified students, staff and faculty who have been identified as being at risk.

“HHSA is working with school officials to provide TB testing to those who may have been exposed,” said Dean Sidelinger, M.D., M.S.Ed., Deputy County Public Health Officer. “TB is treatable and curable.”

Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease. Prolonged close contact with an individual who has TB is required in order to spread the disease to others.

Individuals who need testing and have no medical provider, or need more information, may call the County TB Control Program at (619) 692-8621.

Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region. This is the 25th case in 2010. In 2009, there were 223 cases reported in San Diego County.
