October 13, 2011 (Spring Valley)-- Cali Comfort Restaurant and Sports Bar, along with the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce, will host  the second annual Spring Valley Tailgate and BBQ Festival on Sunday, October 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Troy Street between Bancroft Avenue and Central Avenue.

You’re invited to enjoy a fall day complete with a barbecue cook-off, tastings, live local music, games and family activities. The festival aims to raise money for youth in Spring Valley; this year’s beneficiary is the Spring Valley Sports Council Scholarship Fund.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FESTIVAL

Spring Valley’s own block party features free entertainment for families, children and NFL football fans as well as arts and crafts, live music and a beer garden. Savor BBQ samples for $2 each. Be a judge in the “PeopleChoice Samples” from  12 p.m.  to 3 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 4 p.m.  Over $1000 in prizes will be given away.

Amateur BBQ teams will be competing in five categories: pork ribs, tri-tip, chicken, carne asada and best decorated tailgate team.  The BBQ challenge will satisfy community BBQ cravings, while the winner a year of well-earned bragging rights. Local grillers are trying their hand with a host of sauces for ribs, chicken and pork.  Organizers say there is nothing like bringing the best recipes into one place.  This Spring Valley eatery is a lively candidate for the area's best barbecue, as our East County Eater has previously reported.

Organizers insist their event is the “best BBQ in the Spring Valley area.” They invite you to “bite through that caramelized crust of crunchy goodness” to “experience the unmistakable smoky, spicy taste of genuine slow-smoked American BBQ. The smoker that sends out enticing aromas over the patio and parking lot as it works its magic… Smoked beef ribs are virtual meat CANDY!”

The Spring Valley Sports Council’s purpose is to unite all of the athletic organizations in the Spring Valley area.  They work to develop good sportsmanship, good character, citizenship and physical and mental well-being for the youth athletics. Through the scholarship fund, youth that may not be able to participate in sports will be given an opportunity to do so.
