May 21, 2017 (Alpine) – The County Medical Examiner has ruled that a shooting death on the Viejas reservation in Alpine that occurred on May 16th was a homicide.  Death was caused by a gunshot wound to the torso.

The Medical Examiner has identified the victim as Lorenzo Alejandro Rodriguez, 42.

Rodriguez, an Alpine resident, is remembered on a GoFundMe page for his family as a dedicated father.  “Lorenzo will truly be missed, always will be remembered and loved,” the page states. His roommate told NBC 7 that he leaves behind two children.

A 911 call initially reported a “suicidal” man at 31 Viejas Grade Road, according to an earlier Sheriff’s press release.  Deputies found Rodriguez unresponsive and emergency medical responders were unable to save him, said Lt. Greg Rylaarsdam with the Sheriff’s homicide unit.

Angela Meza, 47, has been arrested and charged with murder.  She has pleaded not guilty. It is unclear what motivated the shooting.
