WATER CONSERVATION GARDEN ANNOUNCES FALL & WINTER EVENTS CALENDAR

August 30, 2012 (Rancho San Diego)—The Water Conservation Garden invites the public to enjoy its 2012 Fall/Winter calendar of classes and events. Gardening classes help residents save water and money by focusing on water-smart landscaping techniques and plants. Classes are taught by professionals, with offerings for both adults and children. Pre-registration is required for all classes. To enroll call 619-660-0614 x 10. Below are descriptions of upcoming offerings on everything from landscape design basics to raising urban chickens.

ONGOING PROGRAMS

FREE Garden Tours – Every Saturday at 10:30 am

Tour the lush, colorful and water-wise garden with a knowledgeable garden docent. Bring your questions and hear the secrets and stories that make our garden special.

 

FREE Special Access Tour – Every Third Sunday at 9:30

Have trouble navigating the terrain of the Garden but no trouble appreciating its’ beauty? Let us take you for a ride! Explore the Garden from the comfortable Verbeck Shuttle with a Garden Guide. This tour seats only 4-5 people. For reservations call 619-660-6841. Advance reservations are required

 

Professional Landscape Design Consultations

Spend 45 minutes one-on-one with a professional landscape designer and you will leave with a complete design plan, and list of suggested plants for your own drought tolerant landscape. Bring a photo of your house and area you want to re-design, the dimensions of the space, and photos of design styles you love. Calling all kid groups! Join Ms. Smarty-Plants™ as she magically takes you on a fun, interactive journey through plant adaptations, the water cycle, conservation and much more. Themed Garden Tour: All About Succulents

Toss the Turf!

Saturday, September 15th (10:00 am-12 noon)

Less Grass, Less Water, More Fun! Learn from an expert! A short course in turf removal, tips for soil evaluation, tuning up your irrigation system and water smart landscapes. $20 Members, $28 Non-Members

 

Landscape Design Basics

Saturday, September 22nd (10:00am-12:00 noon)

You can design a water smart garden from the ground up! Bring your ideas, pictures and your creativity! A professional landscape designer will take you through the steps you need to accomplish your dream landscape. $20 Members, $28 Non-Members

 

Firescaping with Native Plants

Saturday, September 29th (10:00 am-12 noon)

Learn fire-wise landscaping essentials using native plants. This important seminar will guide you through proper plant placement and native plant care.  $20 Members, $28 Non-Members

 

OCTOBER

Irrigation 101

Saturday, October 6th (10:00 am-12 noon)

Tune up your existing irrigation and make it Water Smart with How-to-Tips for retrofitting and installing a basic drip system that saves you money. Great for the irrigation challenged! $20 Members, $28 Non-Members

 

Tai Chi (Qi Gong) in the Garden – Beginning Level

NEW! Saturday, October 13th (10:00-11:30)

Qi (pronounced chi) Gong is a light exercise format originated in China and practiced around the world to benefit and improve the entire body with a sense of greater relaxation and wellbeing. No previous experience is necessary. Bring water to drink and wear loose clothing to be comfortable. This is a standing practice, no mats necessary. $10.00 Members, $15.00 Non-Members

 

Themed Garden Tour: Plants for Attracting Birds & Butterflies

Raising Urban Chickens

Saturday, October 20th (10:00 am-12 noon)

Learn how easy it is to raise and care for your own chickens! Raise farm fresh eggs in your own backyard and learn all you need to know to keep your flock happy and healthy. $20 Members, $28 Non-Members

 

NOVEMBER

Rainwater Collection for the Homeowner

Saturday, November 3rd (10:00 am-12 noon)

Every drop counts! Save rainfall this winter through rainwater harvesting to irrigate your landscape. Learn how to use and install a rain harvesting system! $20 Members, $28 Non-Members

 

Fall Garden Festival

Saturday, November 10 (10:00am-4:00pm)

Join us at the Fall Garden Festival where vendors from throughout southern California will sell drought-tolerant plants perfectly suited to you San Diego garden. A bounty of choices will include native plants, water-smart perennials, succulents, trees, shrubs, herbs, and more. Our "Ask the Experts" booths will be back with information on how to design a landscape, make compost, and cultivate your green thumb. Animal encounters, face painting, and entertainment for all ages will abound! $5 general admission; free to Garden Members and Kids 12 and under.

 

FREE - Home Composting Workshop

Saturday, November 17th (10:00 am-12 noon)

In partnership with the County of San Diego and the Water Conservation Garden, the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation is providing a FREE composting workshop. Learn the basics of composting, how to compost with worms, and how to save water in the process! Compost bins will be sold at the end of the workshop with subsidized prices for Unincorporated County residents so don't forget to bring cash or a check. Creating a Succulent Wall – The newest gardening craze

NEW! Saturday November 17th (10:00 am – 12:00)

Imagine a wall of plants, not just any plants but beautiful succulents. This very popular planting style is here at the Garden! Come learn how to build and design you very own masterpiece! $20 Members, $28 Non-Members

 

DECEMBER

Tamale Making 101

Saturday, December 8th (10:00 am-2:00 pm)

Experience the Latin American tradition of making tamales for the holidays! In this hands-on class you will make both meat and vegetarian tamales, plus a delicious Mexican Christmas punch. Each participant takes home one dozen tamales. Register early, this class fills quickly! $55 Members, $65 Non-Members
