January 31, 2024 (San Diego) -- In the wake of recent flooding in San Diego and with more rainy days on the horizon, it's crucial for pet parents to be prepared for emergencies. Just as we keep first aid kits for ourselves, it's vital to have one ready for our pets to provide immediate care until professional help is available.

Petco has provided the following tips to prepare for protecting your pets before a flood occurs and during an emergency.

A comprehensive pet first aid kit should include:

  • Cotton pads and swabs for cleaning wounds
  • Bandages, gauze rolls, and non-stick bandage tape
  • A digital thermometer and water-based lubricant for checking fever
  • Disposable gloves and scissors for safe and easy application of first aid
  • Tweezers for removing foreign objects
  • A clean towel and treats to comfort and encourage your pet
  • Important information such as your pet’s vaccine and medical history, and contact details of your vet and nearest emergency vet clinic

Recognizing and Responding to Pet Emergencies

Understanding the signs of distress or injury in pets is crucial. Look for unusual behaviors such as vocalizing, excessive licking, hiding, or lethargy. In a medical emergency, such as wounds, burns, or fractures, knowing how to apply basic first aid can be lifesaving.

Petco offers a range of products and resources to help pet parents prepare for and respond to emergencies, from first-aid kits to expert advice.
