October 4, 2010 (Alpine) -- Cathrine Marie Harless, 63, of Alpine was killed Saturday night in a head-on collision on Alpine Boulevard East of Dunbar, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office reports. Her pick-up truck was struck by another pick-up driven by Brian Peterson, 40, of Rancho Bernardo.

“He crossed over the roadway’s double yellow lines directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle,” officer Brian Pennings, California Highway Patrol, said, adding that Harless was unable to avoid a collision. Harless was pronounced dead at the scene, along with her two dogs that were in the vehicle.

Peterson was transported by air ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries. “Upon release he was booked into San Diego County jail,” said Penning, adding that Peterson is charged with driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.
