SOUTHERN STORM SYSTEM SPAWNS DOZENS OF TORNADOES, KILLING 266 PEOPLE IN 6 STATES

April 28, 2011 (Washington Post)--Massive tornadoes tore a town-flattening streak across the South, killing at least 266 people in six states and forcing rescuers to carry some survivors out on makeshift stretchers of splintered debris. Two of Alabama’s major cities were among the places devastated by the deadliest twister outbreak in nearly 40 years.

OBAMA SHUFFLES FAMILIAR FACES IN KEY SECURITY ROLES

April 28, 2011 (CNN)-- President Barack Obama on Thursday shuffled familiar faces in his national security team to deal with the pending retirement of Defense Secretary Robert Gates, reflecting a desire for continuity and the changing nature of modern warfare.

Obama named Central Intelligence Agency Director Leon Panetta as his nominee to succeed Gates, with Gen. David Petraeus chosen to succeed Panetta at the CIA.

In addition, Lt. Gen. John Allen would succeed Petraeus as head of the U.S-led international military force in Afghanistan, and longtime diplomat Ryan Crocker will be nominated as the next U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, the president announced at the White House.

SUPREME COURT EXAMINES STATE, LOCAL ETHICS LAWS

April 27, 2011 (NPR)-- The U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments Wednesday in a case that could put a constitutional cloud of doubt over hundreds — if not thousands — of state and local ethics laws across the country.

For the first time, the justices will consider whether a legislative vote is protected by the First Amendment guarantee of free speech — specifically, whether states may forbid officeholders from voting on matters that appear to involve a personal conflict.

FATAH, HAMAS DEAL COULD AFFECT MIDEAST PEACE PROCESS

April 28, 2011 (NPR)-- There have been upheavals and challenges to the status quo across the Arab world — but not when it comes to the Palestinians, who have been in a stalemate in the peace process with Israel for months.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is preparing to jump-start a push for statehood.

But some believe that initiative could be derailed by a new reconciliation accord between Abbas and the Islamist militants of Hamas, who remain strongly opposed to peace with Israel.
