August 23, 2016 (San Diego) - The long ball killed the Padres last night and even though pitching phenom Jake Arrieta was on the mound tonight, they still tried their best.  Christian Friedrich started for San Diego.

In the third, guess who struck again.  If you guessed the USD alum Kris Bryant, you’d be right.  He hit a laser to left for his 33rd home run of the season and the Cubs led 1-0.

In the fifth, after a single by former Padre Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist doubled to drive him home and the Cubs went up 2-0.  Addison Russell continued his perfect season with his fifth home run in seven games, a two-runner to make the score 4-0 Cubbies.

In the sixth, Bryant hit a sac fly to drive home Arrieta and the Cubs took a 5-0 lead.

Luis Sardinias would score in the ninth on a Wil Myers single to make the score 5-1 and Yangervis Solarte hit a sac fly to drive in Adam Rosales to cut the lead to 5-2.  Myers scored on a wild pitch and the lead was cut to 5-3.  The rally was cut short, however, and the Cubs took game two as Arrieta pitched another stellar game.

Tomorrow's matinee finale is at 12:40 p.m.  Kyle Hendricks will start for the Cubs against Paul Clemens for San Diego.
