March 25, 2017 (Fort Collins, Colo.) - The San Diego State softball team was unable to overcome a six-run third inning for Colorado State in a 7-4 loss Saturday at Ram Field. The Aztecs (18-12, 2-3 MW) and the Rams (14-10, 2-3 MW) now each have one win apiece in the weekend series with the final game moved up to 11 a.m. MT (10 a.m. PT) Sunday with rain in the forecast.

With the game tied at 1-1 after a solo home run by CSU’s Amber Nelson in the bottom of the first and a solo homer by SDSU’s Jenavee Peres in the top of the third, Colorado State exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third on six hits, a walk and a San Diego State error to open up a 7-1 lead.

The Aztecs made a last-ditch rally in the seventh as Megan Smith (Valencia, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch and Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Later in the inning, Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) singled to shortstop to plate Meshack, but Kristen Parker (Mira Mesa, Calif./Mira Mesa HS) was tagged out at third on the play, ending the game.

Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) had two hits to lead SDSU, which was outhit, 10-6, in the game. Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) singled and reached on a walk, while Peres scored two runs, including her eighth homer of the season.

Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits over two innings, while striking out one. Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) tossed four innings of scoreless relief, yielding just three hits and a walk. She struck out two.

With rain expected Sunday, the game has been moved up to an 11 a.m. MT (10 a.m. PT) start.
