SDSU records 20 hits in weekend finale

February 12, 2017 (Los Angeles) - The San Diego State softball team scored the first 10 runs of the game and the final six in a 16-7 victory over Weber State in the final game of UCLA’s Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Sunday in Los Angeles. The Aztecs (2-3), who came into Sunday with 28 hits through their first four games, had 20 today in the victory.

SDSU scored five runs in the top of the second inning, three in the third and two in the fourth to open up a commanding 10-0 lead. The Wildcats (0-4-1) answered with four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to make it a close game at 10-7. San Diego State, however, put the game away with a six-run seventh for the 16-7 win.

The Aztecs had 15 singles and five doubles, batting .513 (20-for-39) for the game. SDSU also drew seven walks and was hit by a pitch once in a game that lasted three hour and six minutes.

Sophomore Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) led the way by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs. Redshirt freshman Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.) added three hits, two runs and a RBI and junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) had three hits and two RBIs.

Four other San Diego State players had two hits apiece, including seniors Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) (2-for-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI) and Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) (2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB), and juniors Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) and Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI).

Freshman Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) singled, scored, walked and drove in a run, while sophomore Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) had a single, RBI, run and two walks in her first game of the season.

The Aztecs used three pitchers in the game, starting with sophomore Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS). The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits over three innings, while striking out two. Junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) pitched the middle 2 2/3 innings to pick up her first win of the season, scattering four unearned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) entered the game in the sixth with a three-run lead and tossed a perfect 1 1/3 innings of relief, striking out three to pick up the save.

SDSU plays host to the 27th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic this weekend, beginning 6 p.m. PT Thursday against No. 13/13 Washington. San Diego State is also slated to play Rutgers (4:30 p.m. PT) and Ohio (7 p.m. PT) on Friday, and UC Riverside at 2 p.m. PT Sunday.
