Senior Rachel Alesi won two events at the meet

March 11, 2017 (La Jolla) - San Diego State track and field won eight individual events and the 4x100-meter relay at the opener of the outdoor portion of its season, the San Diego Collegiate Classic, hosted by UC San Diego Saturday. San Diego State placed second in the four-team event.

The Scarlet and Black took home gold in three track events. SDSU earned the podium’s top two spots in the 800 and 200. Junior transfers Monique McPherson (2:14.41) and Cindy Flores (2:16.06) were first and second in the 800, with sophomore transfer Angela Wilson rounding out the top three at 2:16.20. Senior Tyra Lea won the 200 with a 24.73 time, and, recording a collegiate best, Lisa-Anne Barrow was second at 24.84.  Sophomore Sierra Brabham-Lawrence won the 100-meter hurdles for the third time in her career, crossing the finish line in 13.96.

SDSU also won the 4x100-meter relay (47.21), using a team of Kira Moreland, Lea, Lakin Hatcher and Barrow.

The Aztecs also produced top-three finishes in the 1,500, 400, 400-meter hurdles and 3,000. In the 1,500, Flores’ collegiate-best 4:39.49 was good for second, and senior Elaine Ribeiro finished third (4:40.17). Senior Kassidy Ellis raced to a collegiate-best 59.98 in the 400 for third. Taking second was senior Madison Gipson (1:01.73) in the 400 hurdles and Ribeiro in the 3,000 (10:16.19).

In the field events, San Diego State earned the top spot five times, led by senior Rachel Alesi’s victories in the shot put (43-06.25) and discus throws (170-07.00). The discus saw the Aztecs finish 1-2, as sophomore Anushi Desai recorded a collegiate-best 159-00.50 throw for silver.

The Scarlet and Black also earned the top two spots in the pole vault, led by junior Bonnie Draxler’s 13-04.00 mark. Mountain West indoor pole vault champion Marissa Berry was second, clearing 13-00.25.

Making her SDSU debut, junior transfer Melody Harris won the javelin with a 145-08.25 mark. Barrow secured her first collegiate long jump win, jumping 18-05.25.

Earning third in the hammer throw was Freja Liljedahl ((149-07.50).

As a team, San Diego State finished second with 128 points, 14 points behind meet-winner UC San Diego (142). Point Loma Nazarene was third with 64 points, and Cal State Dominguez Hills picked up 40 points for fourth.

The Aztecs split squads next weekend, with a group heading to the UC Irvine Spring Break Collegiate Classic and another group staying local at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Collegiate at Point Loma Nazarene University.
