Crippled America: How To Make America Great Again, by Donald J. Trump (Threshold Editions, An Imprint 0f Simon & Schuster, Inc., New York, NY, 2015, 193 pages).

Book Review by Dennis Moore

January 2, 2016 (San Diego's East County) - Donald J. Trump, the very definition of the American success story, has now delved into politics with his candidacy for the White House, and explains why in his very provocative book; Crippled America: How To Make America Great Again. Trump, a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance, an accomplished author and having written more than fifteen bestsellers, with his first book, The Art of the Deal, being considered a business classic and one of the most successful business books of all time. There is no question that trump has been a very successful entrepreneur and businessman – but does that necessarily translate into his being a great politician or President of the United States?

In his book, Trump states: “Look at the state of the world right now. It’s a terrible mess, and that’s putting it mildly. There has never been a more dangerous time. The politicians and special interests in Washington, DC, are directly responsible for the mess we are in. So why should we continue listening to them? It’s time to bring America back to its rightful owners – the American people.”

Trump specifically states in his book: “This book is my blueprint for how to Make America Great Again. It’s Not Hard. We just need someone with the courage to say what needs to be said. We won’t find that in Washington, DC.”

If it is true that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, the numerous pictures in this book, such as Trump shaking hands with President Ronald Reagan at the White House, Trump’s confirmation at First Presbyterian Church, and Trump International Hotel & Tower on the river in my hometown of Chicago, certainly says a lot about this man.

With all the success that Trump has had in his life, one might ask why delve into politics? He answers that in a rhetorical question on the very first page of his book by stating: “SOME READERS MAY BE wondering why the picture we used on the cover of this book is so angry and so mean looking. I had some beautiful pictures taken in which I had a big smile on my face. I looked happy, I looked content, I looked like a very nice person. My family loved those pictures and wanted me to use one of them. The photographer did a great job. But I decided it wasn’t appropriate. In this book we’re talking about Crippled America. Unfortunately, there’s very little that’s nice about it.”

In this provocative book, Trump pulls no punches, and spares no one in his aim and professed desire of Making America Great Again! On the back cover of this well written book, it states: “EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT DONALD TRUMP”, with the following examples;

“I’m glad he’s in there, because him being the way he is, and saying what he says the way he says it, I think shakes things up, and I think that’s very needed.”

-          Robert Redford, in an interview with Larry King

“Far from destroying our democracy, he’s exposing all its phoniness and corruption….And changing it in the process.”

-          New York magazine

“We finally have someone who genuinely loves America and is not beholden to the donors….He will be beholden to no one except regular Americans.”

-          Ann Coulter, in an interview with Simon Conway

“Probably the best thing to happen to politics in a long, long time.”

-          Mark Cuban, on Cyber Dust

“Trump fills the vacuum left by a political faction that has for years promised its voters it would do things it had no intention of doing.”

-          The Federalist

“Trump has the fire in his belly to make America great again and probably do it the right way.”

-          Mike Ditka, in a Chicago Sun-Times interview

Of course, there are many that are opposed and disagree with Trump’s ideas about being the next President, and what it would take to make this country great again. That is what is so beautiful about this country we live in. Yes, everyone is talking about Donald Trump! Just recently, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said U.S. presidential front-runner Trump’s rhetoric on Muslims is ignorant and irresponsible. Trudeau said painting the Islamic State Group with a broad brush that extends to all Muslims “is not just ignorant, it’s irresponsible.”

Trump came out swinging with some of the most outlandish statements in his run for the presidency, such as building a wall between the United States and Mexico, and making Mexico pay for it. As a matter of fact, his hawkish stand on immigration seems to resonate with a lot of people in this country, which has kept him atop the polls. Perhaps his most profound and incendiary position has been his proposing a temporary ban on Muslim immigration into the United States, which Rich Lowry, editor of National Review, states; “might be the most roundly and fiercely denounced idea in America since the British Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts (in 1774).” Trumps Muslim position and pronouncement came on the heels of the recent Paris and San Bernardino massacres.

In a recent Republican debate, Trump’s call for temporarily banning Muslims from the U.S. – a proposal roundly criticized by his rivals – dominated much of the discussion heading into the debate, saying he wasn’t seeking to discriminate against Muslims, and specifically stating: We are not talking about isolation; “we’re talking about security,” he said. “We are not talking about religion, we are talking about security.” Another Republican candidate for President, Jeb Bush, countered by stating: “Donald is great at the one-liners, but he’s a chaos candidate and he’d be a chaos president.” That remains to be seen!

Ironically, and in further regard to the comment made by Jeb Bush regarding Trump, in a recent and new biography by Pulitzer Prize winning historian Jon Meacham; Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush, a Bush-Trump presidential ticket was first revealed. The book claims Trump was the one seeking to be veep and asked Bush aide Lee Atwater to vet him for the ticket. But Trump claims it was the other way around.

In his book Crippled America, Trump has even weighed in on the gun control issue, proudly claiming to be a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), along with his sons Donald and Eric. He states in his book: “Gun owners should be allowed to purchase the best type of weapon for their needs, whether it’s for self-protection, sport shooting, or any other purpose.” That is a scary thought!

Since declaring himself a candidate for President of the United States, Trump seems to have taken potshots at everything and everyone, even Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court, questioning his conservatism. It makes me wonder if all this bombast is just theatrics, or a carryover from his “The Apprentice” show. Many people seem to be wondering who is the real Donald Trump?

For a person wanting to be President and Make America Great Again, I have never known someone such as Donald Trump to be so mean-spirited and to take potshots at virtually everyone, examples given; Rosie O’Donnell, Megan Kelly, Mexicans (Mexicans are rapists), President Obama and Chief Justice John Roberts. Surprisingly, he says nothing critical or negative about Russian leader Vladimir Putin or Syrian leader Bashar Assad. Yet, these antics seem to resonate with a fringe element of Americans.

In regard to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Trump expresses admiration for him, referring to him as a “powerful leader” who is “highly respected within his own country and beyond.” Rich Lowry, editor of the National Review, states: “Trump’s call to steal Iraq’s oil and kill the families of terrorists is in a Putinesque key.” Is this Trump’s idea of How to Make America Great Again?

Trump also recently assailed Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton by calling her husband, former President Bill Clinton, “one of the great abusers of the world”, referring to Bill Clinton’s affair with White House intern Monica Lewinski – Trump specifically stated: “And she wants to accuse me of things. And the husband’s one of the great abusers of the world. Give me a break. Give me a break. Give me a break.”

Until reading Cripple America: How To Make America Great Again, I never knew or heard about Trump’s religion, as mostly what anyone heard was about his business savvy and acumen. If it is of any relevance, in his book Trump proudly professes to be a Christian. Just as he takes bold and somewhat controversial stands on gun control and immigration, he has some opinionated stands on religion. He states: “I think people are shocked when they find out that I am a Christian, that I am a religious person. They see me with all the surroundings of wealth so they sometimes don’t associate that with being religious. That’s not accurate. I go to church, I love God, and I love having a relationship with Him. I’ve said it before – I think the Bible is the most important book ever written – not even close. Perhaps The Art of the Deal is second. (Just kidding!)"

Surprisingly, about this book is the fact that at the back the author would include his personal financials, or net worth, which he proclaims: “My current net worth is more than ten billion dollars.” This is uncharacteristic of a politician to be so forthcoming, and especially without any prodding. But then again, Donald J. Trump is not the typical politician. This book, Crippled America: How To make America Great Again, no matter what your political or philosophical leanings are, will be found to be an insightful read and a window into the world of this enigmatic person.

Trump excludes from his book the role he played in the infamous "Central Park Five" case, in which in 1989 five young black men were wrongfully convicted of raping a woman jogging in New York City.

Surprisingly, Trump does not say anything in his book about his stance on the "Central Park Five", or his views on race relations, as they have become an issue in his presidential campaign. Trump actually paid a reported $85,000 to take out advertising space in four of the city's newspapers, including the New York Times. Under the headline "Bring Back The Death Penalty. Bring Back Our Police!" and above his signature, Trump wrote: "I want to hate these muggers and murderers. They should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes. They must serve as examples so that others will think long and hard before committing a crime or an act of violence."

One year after the Central Park Five were convicted, John O'Donnell, a former executive who ran Trump Plaza hotel and casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, published a tell-all alluding to his former boss's casual racism behind closed doors, according to a story by Oliver Laughland in "The Guardian".

O'Donnell quoted Trump as saying: "I've got black accountants at Trump Castle and at Trump Plaza. Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day."

In a later interview with Playboy magazine, Trump labelled his former employee a "fucking loser" but added: "The stuff O'Donnell wrote about me is probably true."

The Central Park Five would later be exonerated, after Matias Reyes, a violent serial rapist and murderer already serving life inside, came forward and confessed to the Central Park rape. He stated that he had acted alone and DNA evidence proved it.

Following a 14-year court battle, the Central Park Five settled a civil case with the city for $41 million in 2014. But far from offering an apology for his conduct in 1989, Trump was furious.

Just days into office as President of the United States, President Donald Trump kept one of his campaign promises by attempting to ban Muslims from entering our country. Fortunately, a New York federal judge, United States District Judge Ann M. Donnelly would issue an order on January 28, 2017 against President Trump and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) enjoining them from doing so. See attached order here.

Perhaps to gain further insight into this man that wants to "Make America Great Again", one need to read the attached "Cohen v. Trump lawsuit here.

Ironically, and in the Trump University lawsuit in San Diego, which is being heard by the judge that Trump refers to as "Mexican", the attached sworn deposition by Trump speaks volumes here.

The judge that Donald Trump refers to as "Mexican" is actually Judge Gonzalo Curiel, and he was born in Indiana, and is pictured here in 1974 as a member of the predominately black Kappa fraternity.

And now, the Attorney General that President Trump has recently criticized, Jeff Sessions, has had a federal lawsuit filed against him and his Department of Justice by the City of Chicago, for threatening to withhold federal funds to Chicago for their alleged support and stance as a Sanctuary City. Read lawsuit here.

Trump gives details of economic vision

In a speech to the Economic Club of New York, Donald Trump said that his economic plan - a mix of tax cuts, regulation elimination and new spending - would reduce the nation's tax burden by $4.4 trillion over 10 years and create 25 million new jobs.

Trump: "Putin More Of A Leader Than Obama"

Donald Trump spoke with "Today" show co-anchor Matt Lauer, and raised eyebrows Wednesday night by repeating his claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a better leader than U.S. President Barack Obama.

Judge Gonzalo Curiel - Moore vs. Grundmann (11-CV-01570)

Judge Gonzalo Curiel, whom I believe to be an honorable judge, ruled against me in my Civil Complaint against Susan Tsui Grundmann and the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board and the case is now pending as an appeal with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Never once did I consider Judge Curiel's "Mexican" heritage as a factor in his ruling against me, as Donald Trump has. I am really saddened by Trump's views on Mexicans, Muslims, women and all others that may be different from him. The 9th Circuit may very well remand my appeal back to Judge Curiel and I expect a fair hearing, not withstanding his heritage or political views.

U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel Blocks Trump Videos' Release"

A federal judge in San Diego has decided that he will not allow the release of videotaped depositions of Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump in connection with a class-action lawsuit against the defunct Trump University real estate program, according to a story by Greg Moran in the Los Angeles Times newspaper. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel - a target of Trump's repeated scorn - also rejected a bid by Trump's lawyers to get the lawsuit dismissed, a ruling that clears the way for a trial that could be costly for the candidate. Several media organizations had sought release of Trump's two videotaped depositions, taken in December and January. Transcripts of the testimony have been released, but Trump's lawyers fought the efforts to make the videos themselves public. Curiel said there is legitimate public interest in having the videos released, but he sided with Trump's lawyers, who had said releasing the videos would generate so much publicity that it would bias potential jurors. The judge wrote that there was "every reason to believe the release of the deposition videos would contribute to an 'on-going' media frenzy that would increase the difficulty of seating an impartial jury.'

The lawsuit filed in 2013 is a civil racketeering or RICO  claim, alleging mail and wire fraud in promoting and selling Trump University, which wasn't accredited as a school. Trump's lawyers argued the case would expand the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act too far, but Curiel also turned aside that claim. Under the RICO law, a winning side can recover triple the monetary damages - a potentially huge bill for Trump, because the class action covers thousands of Trump University customers in 50 states.

Trump University: Cohen v. Trump lawsuit in San Diego

In Trumps own words, in the attached sworn deposition at the end of review, we get insight into what could prove a devastating for his income, as the RICO aspect of this class-action lawsuit could wipe his fortunes away, in that there are treble damages for those in the class which are in the thousands.

"Choices!"

Carole, I remember "Choices" quite well, as I recall having the honor and pleasure of writing a review of this splendid book by you.

Trump: Why couldn't they avoid U.S. Civil War?

Make no mistake about it, the Civil War was about slavery! The U.S. President had a historical question: Why did America's Civil War happen? "Why could that one not have been worked out?" Is he serious, this is not an issue of "The Art of the Deal", but an issue of civil rights and human lives, black lives. I am absolutely astounded by this! As much as this President seems to admire and laud former President Andrew Jackson, a slave owner, is he implying or suggesting that Andrew Jackson would have given up his slaves, and encouraged every other slave owner to do the same? The naivete or insensitivity of this President! This is scary stuff! Slavery was wrong, evil, and against all manner of human decency! There is no way around it, no negotiating it.

In my review of this book, I point out that after 5 young black men had been falsely accused of raping a white woman, Donald trump called for bringing back the death penalty in a full page ad. These young men were later exonerated, but Donald Trump never excepted it, and did not apologize. What he said about Andrew Jackson, and working out some type of deal to avoid the Civil War, short of abolishing slavery, is inexcusable and evil. I, as a black man, can never rationalize this act of barbarism.

For this man to ask the question; "Why could that one not have been worked out?" is beyond reasoning and understanding, especially when he calls himself the President of the United States! I can't imgine anyone finding anything redeeming about Donald Trump's statements, although I will not be surprised to hear some attempt it.

Trump to GOP: Pass health care bill or else!

Time for talk running out, President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned wavering House Republicans that their jobs were on the line in next year's elections if they failed to back a GOP bill that would upend Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act. The vote is expected Thursday.

George H.W. Bush's defection a big deal

George H.W. Bush is planning to vote for Hillary Clinton. That's not considered major news by most mainstream outlets. But it should be. The story, first picked up by Politico late Monday night of last week from a Facebook post by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the former Maryland lieutenant governor, got almost no play, for example, from the New York Times. It created only a very small flurry of interest on Twitter, at least judging from a Bloomberg feed.

Putin ended Clinton's 'Moscow Spring'

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton basked in a diplomatic "Moscow Spring," seizing on Vladimir Putin's break from the presidency to help seal a nuclear arms-control treaty and secure Russia's acquiescence to a NATO-led military intervention in Libya, according to an Associated Press story tod ay by Bradley Klapper and Matthew Lee. When Putin returned to the job, things changed. Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, has vowed to stand up to Putin if elected, drawing on her four years of and downs as the public face of President Barack Obama's first-term "reset" with Russia. By comparison, her Republican opponent, Donald trump, has rung alarm bells in Washington and Europe with overtures to the authoritarian Russian leader.

Trump's 'Crooked Hillary' label may stick

Donald Trump dispatched his Republican rivals by branding each one with an insulting but memorable nickname: "Lyin' Ted" Cruz, "Little Marco" Rubio. As the general election nears, Trump has settled on a label for the likely Democratic nominee: "Crooked Hillary." "It works," he boasted to the New York Times. "It Flows." The problem for Hillary Clinton is that he may be right, according to an op-ed by Doyle McManus in the Los Angeles Times, dated May 11, 2016.

Cruz taps Fiorina as running mate

Early announcement comes right after more losses to Trump in Republican primaries. Hoping to infuse some momentum into his struggling campaign, Sen. Ted Cruz bucked tradition Wednesday and said that former executive Carly Fiorina would be his vice presidential running mate should he emerge from the GOP's July convention as the party's nominee.

"Another Hitler? How world leaders see Donald Trump"

Foreign politicians are responding to Donald Trump's unvarnished world views with equally undiplomatic candor, according to a story in USA Today by Oren Dorell and Jessica Durando, dated March 10, 2016. Three detractors - all current or former Mexican leaders - compared him to Hitler. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto delivered one of the harshest rebukes Monday, telling the "Excelsior" newspaper that Trump's "strident tone" is reminiscent of dictators Benito Mussolino and Hitler, populists who rode a tide of economic discontent to power.

GOP to Trump: Drop attacks on judge

A pair of powerful Senate Republicans on Sunday warned Donald Trump to drop his attacks on a Latino judge presiding over a lawsuit against Trump University. So far, Trump has refused, reiterating in interviews broadcast Sunday that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel's Mexican heritage means he cannot ensure a fair trial involving a billionaire who wants to build a border wall to keep people from illegally entering the United States from Mexico.

Kochs condemn Trump's immigration crackdown

Charles Koch likened President Donald Trump's plan to ban Muslim immigrants to something Adolf Hitler would have done in Nazi Germany, according to an Associated Press story by Steve Peoples in today's Antelope Valley Press. The billionare industrialist and his chief lieutenants offered a more delicate response this weekend when asked about President Trump's plan to block immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries. They described Trump's plan as "the wrong approach" that violated its dedication to "free and open societies."

"Trump ditches debate; Cruz challenges him."

Protesting "wise guy" comments from Fox News about his criticism of anchor Megyn Kelly, Donald Trump said Tuesday he likely won't participate in Thursday's Republican debate - and his campaign manager said later the GOP front-runner would in fact skip the event. Trump's criticism led to pushback from Fox News, including one statement from the network earlier Tuesday that drew the businessman's ire: "We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president - a nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to these meetings." Citing that statement, Trump said that Fox is "playing games."

ACA repeal may boost uninsured 24 million

A Republican bill to replace Obamacare would lead to 14 million fewer Americans with health insurance by 2018 and 24 million by 2026, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said Monday in an analysis that could make the congressional legislation even tougher to pass, according to Erin Kelly in USA Today. The bill would reduce reduce federal deficits by $337 billion over the 2017-2026 period, according to the CBO. The biggest savings would come from reductions in outlays for Medicaid and from the elimination of the Affordable Care Act's subsidies for low-income Americans to purchase insurance.

Pope vs. Trump: 'Not Christian' to only build wall along border

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE - Thrusting himself into the heated American presidential campaign, Pope Francis declared Thursday that Donald Trump is "not Christian" if he wants to address illegal immigration only by building a wall along the U.S. Mexico border, according to an Associated Press story by Nicole Winfield and Julie Pace. Trump fired back ferociously, saying it was "disgraceful" for a religious leader to question a person's faith. The rare back-and-forth between pontiff and presidential candidate was the latest astonishing development in an American election already roiled by Trump's free-wheeling rhetoric and controversial policy proposals, particularly on hot-button issues.

Pope: Trump Is Not A Christian

Just this morning, I was blown away to hear Pope Francis weigh in on our Presidential race, by stating that Donald Trump was not a Christian based on his immigration stand.

Duncan Hunter's use of campaign funds is under scrutiny

Federal law forbids spending campaign funds for personal purposes or benefit, to guard against corrupting influences by donors. defense contractors and others with interests before committees on which Congressman Duncan D. Hunter (R-Alpine) serves are his primary contributors. Hunter's chief of staff, Joe Kasper, on Thursday called the organization (CREW) a leftist group and said it has been focusing lately on politicians like Hunter who support Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump. "CREW's motive is fundraising, plain and simple," Kasper said. "That's what they do - they sound alarm bells, exaggerate, in the hope they can direct more donors and financial support their way."

'Trump is right,' Texas Latina says

Texas Latinas alarmed by immigration, hardworking border-town women feel they're doing more than their share, according to an article by Molly Hennessy-Fiske in the Los Angeles Times, dated May 1, 2016. She points to Patti Magnon and Gina Gil, two Latinas in Laredo, Texas that supports Donald Trump. Gil, of Mexican heritage, called a local bilingual radio show recently to praise Trump's promises to crackdown on welfare cheats. When Patti Magnon hears Trump talk about building a wall to keep out those not legally entitled to enter the country, she isn't offended. She's assured: "He said the Mexicans who are crossing are rapists and murderers. Well, he's right. He's not talking about us. He's talking about the illegals."

Sorry, Dennis....

...if somewhere in this review of a book that purports to be a blueprint for how to Make America Great Again, I missed the blueprint. What does Trump intend to do to cure Crippled America?

Congressman Hunter's use of campaign funds under scrutiny

"The amount and frequency of these improper expenditures alone warrants an audit," the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW) wrote in the complaints about Rep. Duncan D. Hunter (R-Alpine). Hunter's chief of staff, Joe Kasper, on Thursday called the organization a leftist group and said it has been focusing lately on politicians like Hunter who support presidential front-runner Donald Trump. Kasper said Hunter voluntarily flagged the mistaken or questionable expenditures, repaid the campaign $12,000, amended disclosure reports and hired an outside law firm to audit the spending.

Trump moves to middle in his speech on foreign policy

He touts an 'America First' approach, adding that the U.S. would be a 'reliable' power but also keep the world guessing. He voiced a willingness to improve relations with Russia's Vladimar Putin, as he has on the stump. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said "blustering is not a strategy. Do you want someone unpredictable with nuclear codes?"

GOP gender problem just got worse

The female-friendly policies esposed by Clinton put Trump's insults in harsher light. When Republican leaders declared after the last losing presidential election that the party had to do more to attract female voters, this was not what they had in mind, according to a story by Cathleen Decker in the Los Angeles Times. Before a national audience Tuesday night, Donald Trump railed at Hillary Clinton's qualifications for the White House, describing her as an affirmative action hire by the Democratic Party.

"The only card she has is the woman's card; she's got nothing else going," Trump said. "And frankly, if Hillary Clinton were a man, I don't think she'd get 5% of the vote.... The beautiful thing is women don't like her, OK, and look how well I did with women tonight!"

Thrump Threatens GOP's Identity: George Will

"If you look beyond Donald Trump's comprehensive unpleasantness - is there a disagreeable human trait he does not have? - you might see this: He is a fundamentally sad figure. His compulsive boasting is evidence of insecurity. His unassuageable neediness suggests an aching hunger for others' approval to ratify his self-admiration. His incessant announcements of his self-esteem indicate that he is not self-persuaded. Now, panting with a pupp's insatiable eagerness to be petted, Trump has reveled in the approval of Vladimir Putin, murder and war criminal." This, from Nobel Prize winner and Washington Post columnist George Will.

"Branstad embraces Trump's approach"

The first time Donald Trump arrived to campaign in Iowa, six-term Gov. Terry Branstad admits to being skeptical. "He's certainly rewritten the rule book," Branstad told USA TODAY's weekly newsmaker video series. "I mean, he had 1,700 people in Ottumwa. There aren't that many Republicans in Ottumwa. So that's a great turnout and I think that's a tribute to the interest people have in restoring American greatness." Those words echo Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again."
