July 31, 2024 (Santee) – An autopsy confirms that a couple found dead with head trauma yesterday morning at the Lantern Crest senior living facility in Santee died of gunshot wounds. The Sheriff's homicide unit has concluded that Michael Sheehan, 74, shot and killed his wife, Beverly Slater-Sheehan, then committed suicide.
The incident is the second time this year that homicide investigators have been summoned to Lantern Crest to investigate suspicious deaths.
In May, homicide investigators were summoned to Lantern Crest to investigate another pair of deaths that were determined to be a murder-suicide. Investigators found that 82-year-old David Soulner fatally shot his wife, 79-year-old Claire Soulner, then shot and killed himself.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330/after hours at (858) 565-5200. You can remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
Lantern Crest has been considered a model senior living facility by Harvard University's School of Business, according to Michael Grant, Managing Partner of Santee Senior Retirement Communities and owner of Lantern Crest in 2021. ECM profiled Lantern Crest, which features a resort-style ambience complete with a theater, a '50s-style diner with soda fountain, bowling lanes custom-designed for seniors, on-site medical center and doctor, pharmacy, gym, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, dog park, community garden, an award-winning chef serving three restaurants and two bars, cozy tea room, live music and more.
ECM reached out to Lantern Crest to ask if guns are allowed at the facility and whether counseling is being made available to residents, or any efforts made to prevent such tragedies in the future, but we have not received a response.
