March 13, 2017 (Peoria, Ariz.) - The Padres’ lackluster spring training continued with a game against the World Series champion Cubs.  Luis Perdomo started on the hill for the Padres against John Lackey for Chicago.

Expectedly, the World Series champs struck first in the second.  The Cubs’ number one prospect from the University of Cincinatti, Ian Happ, blasted a two-run homer to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.

Of course, the Padres usually score on weird plays, so when Wil Myers got hit by catcher Jose Contreras in the third as he was trying to throw out Cory Spangenberg at third, Spangenberg got to come home and the Cubs led 2-1.  It would be the only run the Padres would score.

But the Cubs added a run in the fifth when Travis Jankowski couldn’t see a routine fly ball because of sun, causing a run to come home and give Chicago a 3-1 lead.  An easy W for the Cubs and they leave Peoria with a 3-1 win.

The Padres get a day off before going to Goodyear, Arizona to face the Reds on Wednesday.  First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
