July 27, 2016 (San Diego’s East County)—This week’s Destination East County includes the Pine Valley Days festival and parade, a Sip of Julian, a Musicians showcase in La Mesa, Helix Water’s customer appreciation day at the Water Conservation Garden, and our own Roaring 20s party at the San Pasqual Wine Bar in La Mesa. 

Plus we’ll have a preview of coming attractions including a theatrical production, night fishing at Santee Lakes, a barbecue and dance, HeART of Mt. Helix, the Julian StarFest, and Viejas Summer Nights.

PINE VALLEY DAYS JULY 29-30

Pine Valley Days will take place July 29th and 30th in the mountain town of Pine Valley.  A highlight of the two-day festival is a parade along Old Highway 80 through Pine Valley on July 29th starting at 9 a.m. featuring horses, bagpipes, clowns, cars, dragons, marching bands and more. 

Other activities include a craft village at the Pine Valley County Park on Saturday, a Friday night deep pit barbecue and dancing in the park after dark, plus a burrito breakfast on Saturday and a music festival. For full details visit www.PineValleyDays.com.

MUSICIANS SHOWCASE IN LA   MESA JULY 29-30

Mounarath-Powell Productions and John Nettles present a Musicians Showcase at the Visionary Performance Space (8693 La Mesa Blvd) in La Mesa on July 29th and 30th at 7pm.

This multi-artist event will include many local performers with musical selections ranging from Jazz to Pop to Musical Theater and more.  Some of the musical selections will be accompanied by members of the City Ballet Orchestra.  The evening will also include vocal performances by John Nettles , City Ballet Orchestra Conductor and Vocalist.



Set in an intimate atmosphere, this cabaret-style show provides a vehicle for both new/emerging and seasoned artists to present their musical talents. For more information, visit www.VisionaryDanceTheatre.org/MP



SIP OFJULIAN JULY 30

The Julian Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2nd Annual ‘Sip of Julian’on Saturday July 30th from 11 a.m. to5 p.m..  The Sip features growers and producers of wine, craft beer, hard cider, and mead, an ancient honey-based beverage, offering up samplings of their  hand-crafted specialties.

Samples will be paired with small bites at each venue, where you can also take in the scenery and spend a relaxing day enjoying the sights and sounds of Julian, a historic gold rush town.  Proceeds will benefit Julian’s annual Country Christmas and Tree Lighting Celebration. ROARING ‘20s PARTY JULY 31 IN LA MESA

East County Magazine invites you to our own Roaring ‘20s party on Sunday, July 31st from 4 to 7 p.m. Don your flapper, gangster or ‘20s film star attire and join the festivities at the San Pasqual  Winery Tasting Room in La Mesa.  Entertainment includes singers and dancers from Visionary Dance Theatre performing a preview of their upcoming production of Chicago, as well as ‘20s era film showings and prizes.  Get in the spirit of the ragtime and Jazz Age at our party of the century completed with a catered Italian feast Al Capone and the Great Gatsby would have loved – all to benefit our nonprofit public media outlet.  For reservations and tickets, visit www.EastCountyMagazine.org.

HELIX WATER HOSTS CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY AT THE WATER CONSERVATION GARDEN JULY 31

 

The Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College will host a customer appreciation day for Helix Water District customers on Sunday, July 31 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  

 

Activities at the event (admission is free) include guided tours of the garden led by experts on horticulture,native habitats, and water-wise gardening, a children’s educational program on butterflies and how to attract them, and refreshments.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS AT GROSSMONT COLLEGE

Grossmont College’s Stagehouse Theatre presents 80 days, the timeless tale of amazing adventures as Phineas Fogg attempts to circumnavigate the globe in less than 80 days to win a sizeable wager.  The play is based on the novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne.  The production runs July 28 through August 5.

LAMPLIGHTERS THEATRE PRESENTS DIXIE SWIM CLUB NOW THROUGH AUG. 7

Remember the good times you've enjoyed with your girlfriends over the years? Lamplighters Theatre presents the Dixie Swim Club, a story of five friends who won a championship swim meet together in college. They bonded together and meet every year on the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina at the same rental beach cottage—best friends who stayed together through life’s challenges and heartfelt moments. NIGHT FISHING AT SANTEE LAKES AUGUST 5 AND 18

You’re invited to drop a line at the last Night Fishing events of the season at Santee Lakes on Thursday evening, August 4th and August 18th from 5 to 11:30 p.m.  A lantern is required and no radios are allowed. Learn more at www.SanteeLakes.com.

JULIAN STARFEST AUGUST 6

The Julian StarFest is a free public star party in Julian that will take place August 6th from 7 pm to 9 pm. you can take a star tour of the heavens using the many telescopes set up in the viewing area. Experts will be on hand to answer questions. Parking is available nearby and it is suggested you bring a red light flashlight to guide yourself to the observing area. If you don't have a red light flashlight, red film will be provided to cover a white light flashlight. Please, no white lights in the observing area. Find out more at www.JulianStarfest.com .

SECRET HILLS RANCH BBQ AND DANCE AUG. 6 TO HELP CANCER SURVIVOR

Secret Hills Ranch (2715 South Grade Road) in Alpine is hosting a barbecue, dance and silent auction on August 6th to help fund medical bills for colon cancer survivor Vicki Halsey, a horse trainer and advocate for children. The deadline for pre-purchasing dinners is August 1.

Dinner will be served from 3 to 7 p.m. The event also includes a silent auction (donations of items welcome) that ends at 6 p.m., petting zoo and jumpie for kids to enjoy.  Dancing will start at 5 p.m. (Dinner costs $10.40 per person; petting zoo $2, jumpie $1; games and a playground are also available at $1 each.)

After battling cancer for six years and undergoing several surgeries, Halsey is now cancer free—but needs help to get back on her feet financially.

HEART OF MT. HELIX AUG. 13

Tickets are now on sale for the 9th annual heART of Mt. Helix set for Saturday, August 13 - 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the park atop Mt. Helix.  The popular party on the hill will feature dancing under the stars to the Mighty Untouchables, samplings from over 15 local restaurants along with wine and spirits from several local establishments including, St. Petersberg Vodka, Hennebery Whiskey, and this year's signature cocktail, The Helix, created by Vom Fass, as well as local brews from Helix Brewing Co., Ballast Point and more.
