January 22, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – Joan McKasson and Joan Merrick were awarded first and second places respectively in the San Diego Watercolor Society’s January show “New Beginnings”. The juror, Carol Mansfield, complimented both paintings for their expert use of watercolor along with their strong colors and designs.

Joan McKasson is a Signature Member of SDWS whose paintings can be found in public and private collections nationally.  To quote the artist, “'Red Pomegranates' was painted from a few pomegranates bought at Trader Joe’s over the Christmas season. The painting is primarily watercolor with some watercolor crayon-embellished lines added for contrast. I was particularly delighted with the glowing red color that developed in the background that unites the distance in the background to the pomegranates.” More of the artist’s work may be seen at her website, joanmckasson.com. As well, she is a popular teacher and lecturer in the San Diego area.

The Second Place winner is Joan Merrick of Spring Valley. She says, “I've always studied life drawing, and am currently working on a series of large single female figure paintings.  A recent model wore long striped stockings and wonderful headpieces, and I loved the look...this painting "Party Doll" is the result.”

The show will continue at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s gallery through January 26, 2013. The gallery is located in Point Loma’s Liberty Station at 2825 Dewey Road and is open Wednesday through Sunday 10 am to 4 pm and is free to the public.
