July 7, 2017 (Philadelphia) - The Padres didn’t get the sweep against the Indians, but they did have a very good series in the American League theater.  Now it’s back to National League play with a stop in the City of Brotherly Love for the weekend.  Clayton Richard started against Nick Pivetta for the Phillies.

It would be embarrassing if the Padres didn't take advantage of the Phillies being dead last in the NL East, but luckily for us, they did.  Two homers by Jose Pirela and Austin Hedges in the first and third gave the Padres a 2-0 lead.

Tommy Joseph put the Phillies on the board with a solo homer in the fourth to cut the lead in half to 2-1.

Hedges gave the Padres a cushion with another homer in the fifth for a 3-1 Padres lead.

But still the Phillies inched closer.  Daniel Nava hit a sac groundout that scored Cameron Rupp in the seventh.  Freddy Galvis tied it up with a single that scored Nick Williams.

Guess who saved the game from going into extra innings?  It was Hedges with a sac fly in the ninth that scored Cory Spangenberg and gave the Padres the 4-3 win and the series lead.

Game two is tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.  Jhoulys Chacin will start against Aaron Nola for the Phillies.
