April 26, 2017 (Phoenix) - After the onslaught of runs last night, the Padres shook off the dust and tried again tonight with Trevor Cahill on the mound against Zack Godley for the Diamondbacks.

Cahill usually pitches well, but tonight he struggled against the Diamondbacks’ poster boy, Paul Goldschmidt.  Goldie grounded up the middle over the glove of Yangervis Solarte to score A.J. Pollock in the first and the Dbacks led 1-0.

Like last night, Arizona continued to pile it on.  Goldschmidt singled and scored Pollock in the third to make the score 2-0.  Jake Lamb singled on a fly ball to right field to score David Peralta and it was 3-0.  And Chris Owings grounded into a force out to score Goldschmidt and make the score 4-0.

But then the Padres got on the board.  Erick Aybar homered to cut the lead to three in the fourth, 4-1.  Cahill doubled on a line drive to score Jabari Blash and make the score 4-2.

But the Diamondbacks stayed away.  In their half of the fourth, Goldschmidt doubled to right to score Peralta and make the lead 5-2.

But from then on, San Diego took control.  Hunter Renfroe homered in the sixth to make it 5-3.

As monumental a comeback as people are sure to paint this for the Padres, they didn’t do anything till the ninth inning.  Or rather, Ryan Schimpf didn’t do anything until the ninth inning when he blasted a three-run homer to right to catapult the Padres to a 6-5 lead.  Solarte added insurance with a double to right to score Manuel Margot and Cory Spangenberg and the Padres managed to salvage the series--at least for now--with an 8-5 win.

The rubber match is tomorrow at--you guessed it--6:40 p.m.  Jered Weaver starts against Robbie Ray for the Dbacks.
