April 29, 2017 (San Francisco) - Remember those Bad Luck Brian memes from 2007?  That was pretty much the Padres’ night last night; they stayed in the game, but a late home run gave the Giants the lead.  However, the Padres’ perseverance gave everyone some hope coming into tonight.  Jhoulys Chacin started on the mound for the Padres against Matt Cain, who’s been pitching surprisingly well.

ECM guesses that you could say that the Padres sort of learned their lesson about scoring early, because they didn’t score until the fourth inning when Erick Aybar singled to score Ryan Schimpf, giving the Friars a 1-0 lead.

But even this plan backfired on them in the fifth when Eduardo Nunez singled to score Conor Gillaspie to tie the game at one. Brandon Belt singled and scored two and the Giants went ahead 3-1.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

Schimpf made the score a bit more palatable with a double in the sixth to score Wil Myers to cut the lead to 3-2.  Austin Hedges made it happen with a single to score Schimpf and the game was tied at three.  With the bases loaded, Hector Sanchez walked, causing Hunter Renfroe to come home and the Padres to take a 4-3 lead.  Manuel Margot singled to score Hedges and the Padres took a two-run lead, 5-3.  Aybar scored and the lead became 6-3.  To cap it all off, Myers blasted a three-run homer out of the yard for a 9-3 Padres lead.

Gorkys Hernandez singled in the sixth to score Gillaspie, but Allen Cordoba made him regret it in the seventh with a three-run bomb to make the final score 12-4 Padres and they’d finish strong to even the series at one game apiece.

The rubber match is tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.  Clayton Richard starts for the Padres against Ty Blach for the Giants.
