July 26, 2017 (San Diego) - Last night was a good night, but a forgettable one as the Padres let game two against the Mets slip out of the hands on one careless play.  There were still two opportunities left to split the series, starting tonight with Steven Matz on the mound for the Mets against Jhoulys Chacin (Chacin was slated to start last night, but the rookie Kyle Lloyd took his place).

They definitely wanted that split and it showed in the first inning when Manuel Margot launched a two-run homer out of the park to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.

Jose Reyes put the Mets on the board in the second with a single that scored Jay Bruce.  The Padres once again found themselves hanging on by a thread with a 2-1 lead.

Wil Myers extended the thread in the third with a double that scored Margot, but it was Luis Torrens who put the cherry on top with a triple that drove in a huge three runs to give the Padres a big 6-1 lead.

With the base loaded in the sixth, Buddy Baumann walked Reyes, but that’s all the Mets would get in that rally and the Padres still led 6-2.

Wilmer Flores got the Mets to within three in the eighth with a solo homer, but the Padres escaped and got their first win of the series, 6-3.

The series finale is tomorrow at 6:10 p.m.  Rookie Chris Flexen starts for the Mets against Luis Perdomo.
