March 9, 2023 (Goodyear, Ariz.) - The Padres started a little mini road trip today with a ride to Goodyear to face the Guardians.  Michael Wacha started against Hunter Gaddis for Cleveland.

The Padres got started right away.  Matt Carpenter doubled to score Austin Nola and David Dahl singled to score Carpenter and the Padres led 2-0 after one.

But as is the story of the spring, the Padres let the other team come back. Zack Collins singled in the second to score ex-Padre Josh Naylor and Tyler Freeman grounded into a double play to score Gabriel Arias and we were tied at two after two.

Jose Azocar struck gold finally in the fifth with a two-run homer and the Padres led 4-2 after five.

Taylor Kohlwey added on with a single in the seventh that scored Azocar.  Connor Hollis singled to score Tim Lopes and the Padres led 6-2 after seven.

The Guardians tried to rally in the ninth, but the Padres held on and won 6-4.

UP NEXT

The Padres next go to Surprise to face the Royals on Friday.  First pitch is at 12:05 p.m. and will only be available on MLB.com radio.  Jay Groome starts against Jordan Lyles for Kansas City.
