June 8, 2017 (Phoenix) - The Padres once again were trying to salvage a series today against the Diamondbacks.  “And for what?” one might ask.  Great question.  Well...as Diego said in the first Ice Age film, “I’ve gotta save whatever dignity I’ve got left.”  Clayton Richard started against Patrick Corbin for the Dbacks.

The Padres actually made a decent effort today.  Austin Hedges singled in the first inning.  That drove in two and the Padres took a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Dbacks scored two runs to tie the game.  Chris Owings doubled into right to score Paul Goldschmidt.  Daniel Descalso singled to left to score Owings.

Hunter Renfroe gave the Padres the lead again with a double in the third to left to score Wil Myers and the Padres took a 3-2 lead.

ECM’s sportswriter almost didn't want to write about what happened the rest of the game, but we serve East County, so we had to.

It all started in the bottom of the fifth.  Chris Ianetta hit a two-run homer to put Arizona up 4-3.

In the sixth, David Peralta singled to score two and Ianetta doubled to score three.  Goldschmidt doubled to score Ianetta and the Dbacks leaped to a 10-3 lead.

Descalso homered in the seventh to put Arizona up 11-3.

And in the eighth, the Dbacks did the last of their damage.  Ianetta doubled to left to score two, Jeremy Hazelbaker doubled to center to score Ianetta and Owings doubled to score Hazelbaker and the Diamondbacks demolished the Padres in the series finale, 15-3 to complete the sweep.

The Padres return to Petco for some weekend interleague play on a Friday night against the Kansas City Royals.  Eric Skoglund starts for the Royals against Jhoulys Chacin.
