June 12, 2017 (San Diego) - The series with the Royals wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but now the Padres return to the National League to face a team with hot bats, the Cincinnati Reds. Bronson Arroyo started for the Reds against Luis Perdomo.
The Reds aren’t the way they used to be. With Scooter Gennett’s record-breaking four-homer game last week and sensation Scott Schebler, the Reds are quickly becoming household names. In fact, it was Schebler who started the scoring with a single in the first that scored two and gave the Reds the 2-0 lead.
Yangervis Solarte did what he usually does when the Padres are losing and singled in their half of the first to make it 2-1.
The Padres finished the job in the second. Austin Hedges doubled to score two and Jose Pirela singled to score Hedges and Franchy Cordero capped it off with a two-run bomb. Solarte came to bat again and knocked out a homer of his own, good for one run and the Padres struck for six runs to make it 7-2.
Wil Myers added on with a single in the fourth that scored Cordero to make the score 8-2.
Hedges singled in the fifth to score Cory Spangenberg and the Padres piled on, now leading 9-2.
Gennett tried to help out the Reds with a single in the seventh to score Schebler, kicking Perdomo out of the game. But the bullpen held firm and the Padres took game one with a 9-3 win.
Game two is tomorrow at 7:10 p.m. Scott Feldman starts for the Reds against Clayton Richard.
