April 7, 2017 (San Diego) - People always feel better when they come home.  Today, we would see if that saying held true for the Padres as they played their home opener against the San Francisco Giants.  Luis Perdomo got the home opener nod for the Padres against Matt Cain for the Giants.

The youngster’s first home opener nod didn't get off to a great start.  He balked in the first inning, causing Joe Panik, who was on third, to score and he Giants took a 1-0 lead.

But Manuel Margot evened that up easily with a solo homer in the Padres’ half of the first inning and tied it at one.  He did it again in the third to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.  After Wil Myers doubled, Yangervis Solarte doubled himself to score him and the Padres suddenly led 3-1.

In the fifth, Solarte singled to score Jankowski and the Padres led 4-1.  The Padres did something weird:  they kicked a starting pitcher out of the game!

Just when we all thought we were experiencing a major breakthrough, Brandon Belt took it all away with a grand slam in the sixth and kicked Perdomo out of the game.  The Giants were ahead just like that, 5-4.

But the breakthrough was still happening!  Solarte doubled in the seventh and scored two and the Padres were on top again, 6-5.  Austin Hedges singled and scored Solarte and the Padres led by two, 7-5.

Belt hit a home run in the eighth to make the score 7-6, but Padres pitching stayed strong and capped off an exciting home opener with the 7-6 win.

Game two is tomorrow at 5:40 p.m.  Jhoulys Chacin starts on the hill for San Diego against Madison Bumgarner for the Giants.

Transaction news:

  • Jabari Blash selected
  • Hector Sanchez on seven-day DL (concussion)
  • Alex Dickerson transferred to 60-day DL
