July 27, 2017 (San Diego) - The Padres were what they needed to be last night, getting the win against the Mets with good offense and even better defense.  Now it was time for the series finale tonight.  Twenty-three-year-old rookie Chris Flexen started on the mound for the Mets against Luis Perdomo.

The Mets struck first.  Michael Conforto scored in the first and gave New York a 1-0 lead.

But the Padres, ever determined to get that split, came back with a vengeance.  Manuel Margot homered in the first to tie the game.

Margot came up big again in the second inning with a double to straightaway center that scored three runs, giving the Padres a huge boost to a 4-1 lead.

Call-up Dusty Coleman joined the slugfest with a three-run blast in the fifth to up the Padres’ lead to 7-1.

Yoenis Cespedes tried to get the Mets closer with a double in the seventh that scored Conforto and kicked Perdomo out of the game.  With runners on second and third, Asdrubal Cabrera scored on a balk.  Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer, but the Padres were able to stop them there and keep a 7-5 lead for the win and--would you believe it--they got their split.

The Padres continue to host the East coast portion of the National League when the Pirates come to town tomorrow night for the weekend.  First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.  Chad Kuhl starts for Pittsburgh against new Padre Travis Wood.
