August 14, 2017 (San Diego) - We all kind of expected that Dodgers series to be a terrible series, but now the Padres are back in San Diego taking on a team they should more than a chance of sweeping:  the Phillies.  Jerad Eickhoff was Philadelphia’s starter in tonight’s game one against Travis Wood.

No first inning scoring tonight, but the Padres still started in the second by loading the bases.  Austin Hedges hit a sac fly to score Wil Myers to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

But even the Phillies objected to the Padres daring to take the lead.  In the third, Odubel Herrera doubled to score Cesar Hernandez.  Freddy Galvis tried to score from first to get the lead, but was tagged out at home and the Padres escaped the inning with a tied ballgame.

Rhys Hoskins finished the job in the fourth with his first home run as a major leaguer and the Phillies took a 2-1 lead.

The Padres tied the game again on a miscalculated throw to first by Mikael Franco in the fourth that would’ve been the final out of the inning. The error allowed Cory Spangenberg to score.

But the Phillies eventually got the upper hand again as Tommy Joseph scored on an error in the sixth and Philadelphia took a 3-2 lead.

The game of leap frog continued into the Padres’ half of the sixth as Hedges tied it up yet again on a single that scored Spangenberg.  This time, the Padres were able to take the lead on Carlos Asuaje’s sac fly that scored Matt Szczur.  Jose Pirela singled to center to score Hedges and Manuel Margot and the Padres opened up the scoring and took a 6-3 lead.

Hoskins hit another solo homer in the seventh and the Phillies crept closer, cutting the Padres’ lead to 6-4.

Spangenberg helped the Padres pull away again in their half of the seventh with a home run that gave the Friars a 7-4 win in game one.

Game two is tomorrow night at 7:10 p.m.  Mark Leiter Jr. starts for Philadelphia against Dinelson Lamet.

Transactions:

  • Kirby Yates reinstated from family leave list
  • Jose Valdez optioned to El Paso
