May 21, 2017 (San Diego) - Last night was yet another night the Padres would like to forget.  But today was, yet again, a brand new day.  Zack Godley started for the Dbacks against Clayton Richard.

There was no slaughter today.  Instead, the Dbacks worked quietly starting in the third inning.  Chris Ianetta hit a solo homer to give Arizona the 1-0 lead.

Ryan Schimpf evened up the score in the fifth with a leadoff home run that just crossed to the left of the right field foul pole.  Austin Hedges singled up the middle, Hunter Renfroe scored and the Padres took their first lead in what feels like an eternity.  Clayton Richard worked some pitcher magic with a base hit to right to score Hedges.  The Padres took their first big lead of the series; a whopping 3-1.

The Pads added one more with the bases loaded and Renfroe singled and T.J. McFarland’s flip home wasn’t caught, allowing Allen Cordoba to score.  Cory Spangenberg hit a sac fly to score Wil Myers and the Padres avoided the sweep with a 5-1 win.

The Padres get a day off on Monday before heading to the Big Apple to face the Mets.  Game one is Tuesday at 4:10 p.m.  Jhoulys Chacin will start against Matt Harvey for the Mets.

Transaction news:

  • Chase D’Arnaud claimed off waivers from Red Sox
  • Carter Capps transferred to 60-day DL
  • Luis Sardinas designated for assignment
