ECM PADRES REPORT: REDS STAVE OFF PADS’ RALLY

March 8, 2023 (Peoria, Ariz.) - The Padres hoped to bounce back against the Reds today.  Luke Weaver started for Cincy against Brent Honeywell Jr.

Alfonso Rivas got the Padres off to a good start with a two-run homer in the second and the Padres led 2-0 after two.

 

Jonathan India put the Reds on the board with a double that scored Christian Encarnacion-Strand.  Ex-Padre Wil Myers singled to score India to tie the game.  That hurts.  Jake Fraley grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Tyler Stephenson and the Reds led 3-2 after three.

 

Jackson Merrill tied the game in the fifth with a sac fly that scored Preston Tucker, but from then on, it was all Reds.

 

Spencer Steer doubled in the sixth to score two, Will Benson singled to score Steer and in the home half, Jose Azocar doubled to score two  and the Reds led 6-5 after six.

 

Tim Lopes homered to tie the game in the seventh and David Dahl singled to score Jakob Marsee and the Padres reclaimed the lead for a little bit 7-6.

 

But the Reds came back.  Noelvi Marte hit a sac fly in the eighth to score Stuart Fairchild to tie the game, Matt McClain doubled to score Elly De La Cruz, Austin Hendrick hit a two-run homer.  Taylor Kohlwey tried in the home half with a two-RBI double, but the Reds prevailed with a 10-9 win.

 

UP NEXT

 

The Padres have a few road games, first in Goodyear against the Guardians tomorrow.  First pitch is at 12:05 p.m. and is only available on mlb.com radio.  Michael Wacha starts against Hunter Gaddis for Cleveland.
