August 27, 2017 (Miami) - The Padres lost 2-1 last night, which is a good thing considering how badly they’ve lost other games this season.  They’ve lost the series to the Marlins, but today they had the opportunity to avoid the sweep with Clayton Richard on the mound against former Padre Dan Straily for the Marlins.

Giancarlo Stanton was quiet yesterday, but he came back today with an RBI double in the third that scored Dee Gordon.  He was given the green light home on the very next pitch; a wild one that gave the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

We’ve seen pitcher magic.  We’ve even seen pitchers hit home runs.  But we’ve never seen a pitcher on the Padres hit a home run until today.  Richard blasted a two-run home run in the fifth and thanks to an unexpected swing of the bat, we were tied.

But of course, Stanton, ever wanting to be the center of attention in the MVP race, blasted a two-run homer of his own in the eighth to give the lead back to the Marlins.  And of course, a fielding blunder by the Padres gave Christian Yelich an inside-the-park home run that finally kicked Richard out of the game.  Carter Capps came in and gave up a home run to Derek Dietrich and the Marlins swept the Padres with a 6-2 win in an otherwise stellar game for Clayton Richard.

The Padres return to Petco and to the NL West, hosting the Giants once more.  First pitch Monday night is at 7:10 p.m.  Jhoulys Chacin will start.
