June 13, 2017 (San Diego) - Last night’s offensive showing against the Reds was what the Padres needed more of.  They hoped to continue that tonight in game two with Scott Feldman on the mound for the Reds against Clayton Richard.

The Padres got straight to work again just like they did last night.  Jose Pirela and Franchy Cordero got on base and Wil Myers did the rest with a looping single to right that scored Pirela and the Padres took the lead.  Yangervis Solarte added another run with an RBI single.  The Padres got four straight hits to start the game and two runs to take a 2-0 lead.

After last night when he hit his first home run of his major league career, Cordero added another in the third with a solo home run to give the Padres a 3-0 lead.

Cory Spangenberg chipped in too with a single in the fifth that scored Solarte to make it 4-0 Padres.

Cordero wanted more.  In the seventh, he knocked out his second homer of the night and it was 5-0 Padres.

Pirela added one more in the eighth with a single to center that scored Austin Hedges and the Padres led 6-0.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Padres game without runs being given up and some sort of milestone being ruined and with one pitch away from ending the game in the ninth, Richard gave up a double to Tucker Barnhart that scored two runs, thus costing him the complete game shutout, kicking him out of the game and putting the Reds on the board.  Brandon Maurer came in and finished the job and despite that blunder, tonight was an all-around impressive performance by the Padres offense and a stellar game from Richard and it earned them a 6-2 win and a series win.

Day baseball tomorrow for the series finale at 12:40 p.m. as the Padres go for the sweep.  Former Dayton basketball star Amir Garrett starts for Cincy against Jhoulys Chacin.
