Immigration bill splits House GOP (The Hill)
November 3, 2011 -- House Republicans are split over an immigration bill that is backed by presidential candidate Mitt Romney as the measure is attracting escalating criticism from industry groups and rank-and-file members.
The rift over House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith’s (R-Texas) E-Verify bill is jeopardizing its chances of passing the Republican-controlled House.

Mississippi to decide if fertilized egg is a human being (Reuters)
November 5, 2011 -- Mississippi on Tuesday could be the first state in the nation to define a fertilized egg as a person, a controversial concept aimed at outlawing abortion, some types of birth control and infertility methods that result in the loss of embryos.

The so-called "personhood amendment" to the state constitution represents a twist in strategy for anti-abortion efforts, which have notched great success across the country this year with dozens of new restrictions put into law.

Restaurant grease as good as gold to biofuels thieves (NPR)

November 7, 2011 -- Used restaurant grease has become a hot item for thieves, who siphon it from barrels behind restaurants to sell on the booming biofuels market.

Late last month, the California Department of Food and Agriculture said it would pay local police target the alleys and parking lots where restaurants typically park their barrels of used grease.

Study proves many U.S. corporations paid zero taxes (Raw Story)
November 3, 2011 -- Dozens of US corporations paid no federal taxes in recent years, and many received government subsidies despite earning healthy profits, a new study showed Thursday.
The report by Citizens for Tax Justice and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, which examined 280 US firms, found 78 of them paid no federal income tax in at least one of the last three years.

Obama rips House “In God We Trust” vote (CBS)

November 2, 2011 -- President Obama on Wednesday mocked a vote Tuesday evening in the House of Representatives to reaffirm "In God We Trust" as the nation's motto.
In a waterfront speech in Washington calling on Congress to pass legislation to repair the nation's crumbling infrastructure, the president said Congress should be able to get to the legislation, noting members have "been debating a commemorative coin for baseball" and reaffirming the "In God We Trust" motto.

Filner urges Obama to back off medical marijuana (San Diego Union-Tribune)
November 2, 2011 -- Rep. Bob Filner and several congressional colleagues are urging President Barack Obama to reclassify marijuana as a legitimate controlled substance for medicinal purposes under federal law.
In a letter dated Oct. 28, the lawmakers expressed concerns with the Justice Department’s recent crackdown against California medical marijuana dispensaries that are operating legally under state law. State and local governments must be allowed to develop and enforce their own public health laws with regard to medical cannabis, they wrote.

Greek PM on brink; world tells Europe to fix crisis (Reuters)

November 3, 2011 -- Intense European pressure forced debt-stricken Greece to seek political consensus on a new bailout plan instead of holding a referendum after EU leaders raised the prospect of a Greek exit from the euro to preserve the single currency.

Fast-moving events in Athens overshadowed the first day of a summit of the Group of 20 major economies on the French Riviera on Thursday, with anxious world leaders urging Europe to act to stop contagion from its sovereign debt crisis.

The IMF chief added that whilst efforts to solve the crisis were heading in the right direction, more needed to be done to restore confidence.

“Monster” greenhouse gas levels seen (CBS)
November 3, 2011 -- The global output of heat-trapping carbon dioxide jumped by the biggest amount on record, the U.S. Department of Energy calculated, a sign of how feeble the world's efforts are at slowing man-made global warming.
The new figures for 2010 mean that levels of greenhouse gases are higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four years ago.

"France and Germany have had intense consultations on this issue over the last months, at all levels," a senior EU official in Brussels told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions.

What’s the matter with Italy? (BBC)
November 7, 2011 -- Italy is moving to centre stage in the eurozone debt crisis.
While Greece has generated a lot of noise, it is increasingly seen as a sideshow.
Greece's debt problems are already widely known and the immediate consequences of a Greek default largely anticipated.
