April 5, 2017 (Los Angeles) - Don’t look now, but the Padres could have the lead in a series.  The opening series, in fact.  And away from home.  Against the Dodgers.  With Trevor Cahill on the mound against Rich Hill for the Dodgers.

The Padres weren’t so lucky tonight.  And their woes started in the very first inning when former Padre Adrian Gonzalez doubled to score Corey Seager and the Dodgers were up 1-0.  What should’ve been a routine catch at first on a ground ball was somehow missed by Wil Myers and Gonzalez scored on an error, making the score 2-0 LA.

Hunter Renfroe gave the Padres some reprieve with his first home run of 2017 in the fourth, which would’ve tied the game if Myers wasn’t caught stealing second.  But nonetheless, the Padres cut the Dodgers’ lead to 2-1.

But Yasiel Puig got the lead back to two with a solo homer in the Dodgers’ half of the fourth.  The lead was back to 3-1.  In the end, it wasn’t the Padres who took the series lead, but the Dodgers with the 3-1 win.  Sorry for jinxing it.

The Padres and Dodgers play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 12:10 p.m.  Jered Weaver will start for the Padres against Brandon McCarthy for the Dodgers.

Transaction news:

  • Pitcher Keith Hessler outrighted to AAA
