July 1, 2023 (San Diego) – A man found unresponsive in his cell at San Diego County Central Jail on June 26 died two days later at UCSD Hospital. The Medical Examiner has found the cause of death was suicide by hanging.

He is the eighth person in the San Diego County Sheriff’s custody to die this year. He was from El Cajon, according to the East County Mortuary.

Pedro Junior Ornelas III was arrested June 16 by the California Highway Patrol on a felony warrant for suspicion of pimping and pandering, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm, ammo, and a controlled substance while armed.

After he was found unresponsive his cell, deputies and jail medical staff provided medical aid at the jail until relieved by the San Diego Fire Department and later transported to the hospital.

“We extend our sympathies to the Ornelas family and those affected by his death. A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of their loved one,” says Lieutenant Joseph Jarjura with the San Diego County Sheriff’s homicide unit.

As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit will conduct a thorough investigation.
