"HISTORY ALIVE" OCT. 5 IN LEMON GROVE FEATURES FAMOUS BUFFALO SOLDIERS

September 23, 2023 (Lemon Grove) -- The Lemon Grove Historical Society’s 45th annual free "History Alive" lecture series will present the story of the Buffalo Soldiers, led by Trooper Rachel Hilliard (photo,left), founder and president of the San Diego Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers, and several troop members. This special presentation will take place on Thursday, October 5 at 5 p.m. at the H. Lee House Cultural Center,3205 Olive Street in Lemon Grove.

“This extraordinary organization played a major role in America's westward expansion as they helped and saved many wagon trains of migrants, seeking farmland, pasturage and places to establish towns,”says Helen Ofield, historian to the board of the LGHS. “On every level, the Buffalo Soldiers are at the heart of American history. Don't miss this uniformed presentation.”

September 21, 2023 (San Diego’s East County) -- As autumn arrives and Halloween draws near, East County has a wealth of festivals and events coming up.  These include Julian’s Autumn Jubilee and an Heirloom Apple Festival, Oktoberfests in La Mesa and El Cajon, the Borrego Days Desert Festival,  Haunt Fest on Main in downtown El  Cajon, a Pumpkin Bash and Spooky Campover at Lions, Tigers and Bears in Alpine,and a Pumpkin Express train ride in Campo.

Plus there are live entertainment stars taking stage in East County, including comics Paula Poundstone and Randy Rainbow at The Magnolia, the rock artist  Sting at SDSU, and El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells with his band in a benefit concert to help the homeless in El Cajon.

September 14, 2023 (La Mesa) – The La Mesa Chamber of Commerce invites you its 14th annual  Salute to Local Heroes dinner on Thursday,  October 5 at  Sycuan Casino Resort.

“This evening is our opportunity to come together and honor those that are dedicated to the citizens of La Mesa and our community,” says La Mesa Chamber President Mary England. “The pandemic has given us a great opportunity to see our local heroes in action. We are celebrating those that serve our community in extraordinary ways from: the La Mesa Police Department, Heartland Fire & Rescue – La Mesa, AMR Paramedics, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol. During this evening we will also install our Board of Directors.”

The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:45 p.m. in Sycuan Casino Resort’s Heritage Ballroom at5485 Casino Way,  El Cajon 92019.

SYCUAN HOSTS POWWOW SEPTEMBER 8-10

August 9, 2023 (Sycuan) – The 2023 Sycuan Powwow will be held September 8-10 at the Sycuan Resort, 5577 Dehesa Road in El  Cajon.

The annual celebration will feature tribal dancing contests each day as well as bird singing competitions on Sept. 9. Other activities include peon games at dusk, traditional Native American arts and crafts vendors, and refreshments.

51ST BARONA POWWOW SEPT. 1-3 HONORS NATIVE AMERICAN TRADITIONS

August 9, 2023 (Barona) – For more than half a century, the Barona Band of Mission Indians has been hosting its powwow, a traditional gathering attracting Native American tribal members from across  North America.

The 51st annual Barona Powwow features competitions in tribal dancing and drumming. It will be held on the Barona  Reservation at the Barona Sports Complex, located at 1095 Barona Road in Lakeside.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS RESOURCE FAIR AND DISCUSSION SET FOR RAMONA

 
August 16, 2023 (Ramona) - Community members can learn ways to prepare for an emergency like a fire or earthquake at a resource fair and panel discussion Saturday, August 19 at 12:30 p.m. at the Ramona Library (1275 Main Street).   
 
The free event is hosted by the County’s Live Well San Diego Rural Communities Sector. It will bring together County emergency preparedness experts from the Sheriff’s Department, County Fire and Public Health Services. 
 
The panel discussion will begin at 1 p.m. with information about how to prepare now before an emergency hits, and the types of disasters to prepare for, especially in the county’s rural areas.

July 24, 2023  (Mt. Helix) – The Mt. Helix Food and Wine Festival returns on August 19 to benefit the Mt. Helix Park.  The event takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. at the historic and inspiring Mt. Helix amphitheater and 7-acre nature preserve atop one of our region’s tallest peaks, with 360-degree views.

This year’s event features a Wild West theme. Whiskey Ridge band will entertain on the main stage and The Tradesmen up at the cross location as guests savor food and beverages from over 40 sampling booths.  The park will be transformed with a secret Speakeasy Saloon and  line dancing.

LEMON GROVE FORWARD CLUB CELEBRATES 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF REOPENING 85 YEAR CHARTER WITH THE WOMENS CLUB FEDERATION

 

Come celebrate the historic accomplishment of 25 community members that answered a social media post to reopen an 85-year-old service club.

 

On June 20, 2022, now President Jessyka Heredia and Vice President Teresa Rosiak put out a Facebook post asking if people in Lemon Grove and surrounding areas would like to join the 2 women in reopening the club. 50 people replied and 25 people showed up to the very first meeting in the back patio of Giardino, a local Italian restaurant. All 25 attendees ended up signing up and 1 year later the club has 28 members, one of the largest service clubs in Lemon Grove today.
