LAKESIDE/RIVERVIEW INTERNATIONAL FAIR MARCH 16

March 9, 2013 (Lakeside) - Travel around the world and learn about other cultures, watch traditional country dances, play carnival games and taste exotic foods at Riverview Elementary School and Lakeside Union School District’s 5th Annual International Fair on Saturday, March 16th from 11am to 5pm. This fun-filled community event, complete with a one-of-the-kind silent auction, inflatables for the kids, photo booth, face painting, petting zoo and local product vendor and food booths takes place on the grounds of Riverview Elementary School at 9308 Winter Gardens Boulevard in Lakeside. GRAND OPENING: WINE TASTING ROOM AT HACIENDA DE LAS ROSAS WINERY IN RAMONA MARCH 23 AND 24

March 9, 2013 (Ramona) –  Winemakers at Hacienda de Las Rosas Winery are pulling out all the stops for the grand opening of their new wine tasting room at 18011 Bluegrass Road in Ramona. The event will be held March 23 and 24 from 12-5 p.m.

In addition to savoring wines, you can tour this family run winery and horse ranch – plus see special demonstrations by nationally acclaimed horse trainer Jorge Valenzuela and his champion Peruvian Paso horses.  There will also be a blessing of the mission-style winery by Father Fucci of San Diego Mission de Alcala on Saturday at noon. Guests can also view creations by international artist Robert Kidd, enjoy barrel tasting of Swiss Chocolate Almond brandy and port, and more.

MEET THE WINEMAKERS MARCH 16 AT SANTA YSABEL CASINO

 

March 8, 2013 (Santa Ysabel)--Savor local vintages and meet winemakers from our region at Santa Ysabel Casino’s “Meet the Winemakers” event on March 16 from 3-6 p.m.  Participating vintners include J.Jenkins, Woof ‘N Rose, and Witch Creek wineries.

The event costs $30 and includes gourmet appetizers, wine tasting from local vintners, $5 in slot machine play, and $5 toward tasting on a new state-of-the-art wine system.

EASTER BUNNY JOINS MARDI GRAS PARADE TO BENEFIT ALPINE SCHOOLS MARCH 10

 

 

March 6, 2013 (Alpine) – The Alpine Education Foundation will present a Mardi Gras parade on March 10 from 1-4 p.m. at the Alpine Creek Town Center shopping center.  The parade will feature floats and the Easter Bunny.

Admission is free to the event, which also features a craft fair, face painting, food booths from local restaurants, West Coast Riders action photos and more.

JACUMBA HIKERS ANNOUNCE BACKCOUNTRY OUTINGS

WILDLIFE TRACKING WALK SATURDAY AT MISSION TRAILS

 

February 27, 2013 (San Diego's East County)--Want to learn how to identify signs of wildlife on the trail?  Join a Mission Trials Regional Park guide and tracking team member on the first Saturday of each month, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., for an adventure in wildlife tracking.

Learn the art of discovering signs left behind by resident creatures during two fun-filled hours of “dirt time.” These free tracking walks meet out in front of the Visitor Center and are suitable for the whole family.

COMMUNITY GARDEN DAY IN EL CAJON FEB. 23

 

February 17, 2013 (El Cajon)--Feb. 23, 2012 is a Day of Celebrating Community Gardens in El Cajon. Events are scheduled throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at different gardens and venues. Please see attached flyer.

At 11 a.m. there will be a grand opening celebration at Circle Community Garden, 476 Highland at Farragut Circle. We will celebrate with a ribbon cutting at 10:55, short speeches by dignitaries, introduction of committee and Master Gardeners. Cake then will be served and Master Gardener Joyce Gemmell and others will be there to answer gardening questions.

STAR GAZING PARTY AT MISSION TRAILS TONIGHT, FEB. 16

 

February 16, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) --Join Mission Trails Regional Park Trail Guide and resident Star-Gazer George Varga at the far end of the Kumeyaay Campground's Day Use Parking Lot from 5 to 8:30 p.m. tonight. A telescope will be available to view the nighttime sky.

Tonight’s event is one day before First Quarter Moon. Deep sky objects like the Orion Nebula, the Little Beehive (M41) in Canis Major, Crab Nebula (M1) in Taurus and numerous Open Clusters in Auriga should be visible. Planet Jupiter will be high up almost on the meridian.

Participating organizations will have informational booths about what services they offer, how to receive those services and how to volunteer.  The types of information provided will include emergency preparedness, elder care, nutrition, foster care and much more.  There will also be children’s activities throughout the day.

ASIAN FESTIVAL CONTINUES TODAY, RAIN OR SHINE

February 10, 2013 (San Diego) - Rain, thunder, chilling wind, and even a hail storm could not stop the Kearny Mesa Lunar New Year Festival from taking place. Yesterday, elected officials and visitors were treated to a tour of the "Asian Village" where they learned about the cultural significance of each village building or structure. The evening concluded after a New Year's Eve concert that featured the top artists from Asia Entertainment Inc, and the Little Saigon Idol.  

Festival organizers said that the Festival will open again today regardless of rain, shine, or ice.  Sunday's entertainment will include an exciting Miss Teen Traditional Dress Beauty Pageant.

February 9, 2013 (El Cajon)-- A library exhibit featuring John Robert Clifford, a seminal figure in African American history and a forefather of a Cuyamaca College administrator, and a stepping demonstration by members of a historically black fraternity are part of the commemoration of Black History Month at Cuyamaca College.

Danene Brown, interim vice president of instruction at Cuyamaca College, poses next to a campus library exhibit about her great-great-great uncle, John Robert “J.R.” Clifford, a seminal figure in African American history. The display is part of the college’s commemoration of Black History Month.

TAKE FLIGHT WITH "HISTORY ALIVE" ON FEB. 7

January 26, 2013 (Lemon Grove) – The next "History Alive" lecture, sponsored by the Lemon Grove Historical Society, on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the H. Lee House Cultural Center, 3205 Olive, Lemon Grove, will feature Alexander D. Bevil discussing "Angels at 7 o'clock," his illustrated story of pioneering women aviators who made history between World War I and the 1930s when aviation was in its infancy. 

"Faced with gender bias, ridicule and sometimes outright sabotage, these 'First Ladies of Flight' had a single-minded determination to fly," said Bevil, who has been a California State Parks historian since 1998 and is the current president of the Congress of History of San Diego & Imperial Counties.

FREE EAST COUNTY PRODUCE EXCHANGE SATURDAY, JANUARY 26 IN JAMUL

The East County Produce Exchange is kicking off the New Year with an event on Saturday, January 26th. It will be held in the Jamul Hardware parking lot from 3:30-5:00. The Exchange is a monthly event in Jamul, where people come from all over the county to exchange freshly grown fruits and vegetables. The produce exchange is like a farmer’s market, but it is a free event. There is no money involved!

 You set out your produce on a table, and then walk around and take what you want from others, while others will take from you.  This month the exchange expects to have lots of oranges, lemons, chard, cabbage, broccoli, kale,  onions, and herbs.

ALL ABOARD! VINTAGE TRAIN RIDES EACH WEEKEND IN JANUARY

January 14, 2013 (Campo)--All aboard! Vintage Train Rides and museum tours are offered each weekend in January at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, Campo, one of the "eight great" railroad museums in California. 

Ride the museum's "Golden State" excursion train to Tunnel 4 and the Lower Campo Creek Bridge at 11 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. each day. Reservations not required, however reservations are required to ride with the engineer.

LA MESANS CELEBRATE IN STYLE AT PARTY OF THE CENTURY

January 13, 2013 (La Mesa) – Capping off a year of centennial celebrations, La Mesa hosted its “Party of the Century” last night.  Held at the La Mesa Community Center, the event featured music through the decades and areas decorated to reflect the many colorful eras in La Mesa’s past.

 

Dignitaries past and present turned out.  Many guests came in period attire, adding to the festive mood at this memorable occasion.

MASKS AND BEADS HERALD MARDI GRAS SUNDAY UCCLM FEB. 10

January 13, 2013 (La Mesa) -- Tradition holds that Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) ushers in the reflective season of Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 13th.  The United Church of Christ of La Mesa (UCCLM) will be celebrating that tradition on Sunday, February 10, 2013 with a Mardi Gras Sunday worship service. The public is invited to dress up (carnival masks and beads welcome!) and join in this service celebrating the joy of faith.  Music – from “Just a Closer Walk” to “When the Saints Go Marching In!” will highlight both the 8:30am (in Friendship Hall) and 10:00am (in the Sanctuary) services.

HAWKWATCH 2013 BEGINS JANUARY 5 IN RAMONA

January 4, 2013 (Ramona) – HawkWatch 2013 begins on January 5 at 9 a.m. at WRI Headquarters in Ramona on Highland Valley Road.  Observe wintering and resident raptors including Golden Eagles, wintering Ferruginous Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, Prairie Falcons and Red-shouldered Hawks, to name a few.  There are over 19 species of raptors that can be seen at the Ramona Grasslands.
