November 29, 2010 (Spring Valley) – A mother with two children smelled smoke and discovered her bed on fire this morning. Fortunately, the family as well as two guests all evacuated safely from the duplex apartment, located in the 3100 block of Bernis Court in Spring Valley.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading beyond the unit. Other than he smell of smoke, an adjacent unit suffered no damage thanks to the efforts of 25 firefighters San Miguel Fire, Heartland Fire and Rescue, and Cal-Fire.

The mother told authorities that she did not hear a smoke detector. San Miguel Fire reminds the public that smoke detectors should be tested monthly and batteries changed twice a year.

Damage is estimated at $80,000, including $50,000 to the dwelling and $30,000 in contents.
