July 12, 2011 (Santee)--The Santee Fire Department along with units from Lakeside and La Mesa responded to the report of a residential structure fire at 9117 Fonteyn Ct. in Santee this afternoon. The first fire unit arrived just over eightminutes after the time of dispatch; 19 firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control and restricted the damage to the garage area.
Proposal that could halt Alpine high school construction will also be heard by board
July 11, 2011 (El Cajon) – The Boundary Committee for the Grossmont Union High School District has adopted recommendations for shifting high school boundaries throughout the distirct. The recommendations will be presented Thursday, to the GUHSD Boardat 6 p.m. in the East County Regional Education Center, 924 East Main Street in El Cajon.
Lines will be changing across East County. For example, on Mt. Helix many students now in the Grossmont High School district are proposed to shift to Monte Vista, a school with a far poorer academic record, to ease overcrowding at Grossmont. In Blossom Valley, proposed new lines would similarly shift some students to a poorer performing school, in Lakeside sparking protests from parents.
SB 40, the Gambling Control Act introduced by Senator Lou Correa of Orange County, seeks to legalize intrastate Internet poker while cracking down on illegal online poker operations. Supporters say the bill would created a new source of revenues and jobs in California to ease budget deficits and high unemployment. But opponents contend it would undermine Indian tribal gaming operations and hurt tribal economic development.

July 12, 2011 (San Diego) --The charges against Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper, News of the World, have gotten so bad in recent days that people are being arrested and the entire newspaper was shut down. The Murdoch-owned tabloid, already under fire for allegedly hacking thousands of people's phones, reportedly hacked into the voicemail of murdered teenager Milly Dowler, potentially impeding a police investigation and giving her family false hope by deleting voicemails. Reports have also emerged of News of the World allegedly hacking the phones of families of fallen soldiers and the father of a victim of a July 2005 terrorist bombing.

Today, the utility announced it has signed two more contracts: a 25-year power purchase agreement for 150 megawatts (MW) of solar power with Solar Gen 2 LLC and a one-year contract for 40 MW of geothermal power with Silicon Valley Power.

July 7, 2011 (San Diego) – Derek Casady, former editor of the Daily Californian newspaper in East County and his wife, Nancy, have filed a lawsuit against several of the world’s biggest financial institutions alleging that AIG and others engaged in fraudulent practices and misled the federal government to get bail-outs. The suit documents fraudulent practices alleged in detail. It also seeks return of bailout monies paid for with taxpayers’ money—plus triple damages and a jury trial.
July 10, 2011 (La Mesa) -- A volunteer citizens group overseeing the Grossmont Healthcare District’s spending of $247 million in voter-approved bonds for construction infrastructure projects at Sharp Grossmont Hospital has two new members. La Mesa resident Glen Sparrow, a retired San Diego University professor, and Lakeside resident Kenneth Lavigne, training director with the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local 206, have agreed to serve on GHD’s Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee (ICBOC). Both were recently appointed to the ICBOC by GHD board of directors.

Will Not Release Second Draft Maps in Order to Gather More Public Input Throughout Line Drawing Process and Produce Best Final Maps Possible
July 10, 2011 (Sacramento) -- The California Citizens Redistricting Commission decided at a recent meeting, that in order to produce the best district maps possible, it would amend its schedule and not release a second round of draft maps. The Commission will be posting visualizations of proposed districts, and make equivalency files available for organizations and news outlets to provide greater detail to the public on the visualization proposals. The visualizations are proposed options for districts and are considered and discussed by the Commission at their meetings instructing the line drawers.
At a previous meeting, the Commission set July 28th as the deadline for submission of public comment on the Commission's second round of draft maps to be released July 14th. The Commission encourages the public to submit their written comment as soon after July 14th as possible so the testimony can be fully considered.
July 10, 2011 (San Diego) -- San Diego Police Gang Unit detectives have arrested 18 year old Anthony Penn and a 16 year old juvenile for a shooting that occurred yesterday in the Emerald Hills neighborhood. Two victims, 21 year old Martin Barnett, who was confronted by the suspects, and 7 year old Laura Castello, an innocent bystander who was playing in her yard nearby, were wounded. Both victims are expected to survive their injuries.
July 10, 2011 (San Diego) – Jose Antonio Carrillo, 49, a resident of Encanto, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he had a sexual affair with a 16-year-old female student. Carillo served as a volunteer field hockey coach at Bonita Vista High School in Otay and also was an instructor at Jackie Robinson YMCA in San Diego.

July 9, 2011 (La Mesa) -- A wine-tasting passport is being offered by five San Diego wineries this Summer. The cost of the passport is $25.00.With the passport you can visit five San Diego County area wineries including some in East County. The wineries are Belle Marie, Bernardo, Cordiano, Hacienda de las Rosas, and San Pasqual.

July 9, 2011 (San Diego County) -- On July 6, 2011, at about 1;00 PM, 71 year old Joe Elizondo walked away from his residence located in the 3500 blk of Badillo Rd., San Marcos. Elizondo left without his required medications, and he may also suffer from some mental disorder.
Elizondo had previously walked away but was located in National City two days later. Notification of Elizondo's disappearance had been sent out to all law enforcement agencies in both San Diego and Riverside Counties. However,
as of July 8, 2011, Elizondo had not been located.
