January 14, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Frederick “Rick” Sturckow, who grew up in Lakeside and La Mesa, may be the commander on the next space shuttle flight. NASA has named Sturckow to fill in at least temporarily in training for commander Mark Kelly, whose wife, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is recovering from an attempted assassination in Tucson.

January 14, 2011 (San Diego) –San Diego Councilmember Marti Emerald said her office has been in daily contact with the Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA), pushing the agency to extend federal assistance to San Diego property owners swamped by recent rains and flooding.

 

“It appears the city qualifies for federal aid because of the amount of damage to public and private properties, but San Diegans are still asking when repair dollars will be available,” Emerald said in a statement issued today.

January 13, 2011 (Bonita) – After a resident called 911 to report that someone was trying to break into the home in the 5300 block of Robinwood Road in Bonita, Sheriff’s deputies found screens had been removed from two windows and two sliding doors. A door lock had also been broken. Deputies arrested Cinely Ruvalcaba, 23, a parolee who was found hiding beneath an elevated porch, Lt. Scott Ybarrondo reported.

BORDER PATROL AGENT ARRESTED FOR HARBORING ILLEGAL ALIENS; FATHER SOUGHT BY AUTHORITIES

 

 

January 11, 2011 (San Diego) – U.S. Border Patrol Agent Marcos Gerardo Manzano Jr., 26 has been arrested yesterday on a federal warrant and charged with harboring illegal aliens and making a false statement, San Diego FBI Special Agent Keith Slotter announced today. Also arrested was Jose Alfredo Garrido-Morena, 26, who is charged with being a deported alien with no legal right to enter or be present in the U.S.

 

The arrests are the result of an investigation by the Border Corruption Task Force.  Authorities are also seeking Manzano's father, Marcos Gerardo Manzano Sr., who is a fugitive.

Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (who would direct All About Eve three years later) it starred Gene Tierney as a widow who falls in love with the spirit of a crusty sea captain played by Rex Harrison haunting her seaside cottage.

January 10, 2011 (El Cajon) – Jodi Lynne Boyd, 35, is in custody after attempting to steal narcotic pain medication from the CVS Pharmacy at 2760 Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon. According to El Cajon Police, the suspect simulated a handgun and demanded oxycontin at the pharmacy counter. But the attempted robbery was foiled by the actions of two store employees.

PILOT, 87, DIES FROM INJURIES AFTER PLANE CRASH IN WARNER SPRINGS

January 11, 2010 (Warner Springs) – Richard Hawkins, 87, has died of injuries after the World War II Trainer plane (tail number N57027) that he was flying crashed crashed late yesterday at Warner Springs Airport. His son remains hospitalized in critical condition at Palomar Medical Center, 10 News reports.

“Tonight at 5:24 p.m., three engines companies under the direction of Battalion Chief John Butz responded,” Cal-Fire battalion chief Nick Schuler said yesterday. “When firefighters arrived, the aircraft was in multiple pieces.”
