June 16, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) –Love and marriage can be beautiful for all concerned, but there are some things to consider when thinking about getting married . We consulted an attorney, Jennifer Hughes, to share some ideas on the subject of prenuptial agreements.
June 14, 2010 (San Diego's East County) -- A 5.7 earthquake struck 5 miles southeast of Ocotillo, near the San Diego County line, at 9:38 p.m. The jolt, originally reported as a 5.9, was later downgraded by the U.S. Geological Service, was felt throughout San Diego but most strongly in communities in East County.
A dozen aftershocks have already struck in the first 20 minutes after the initial quake. In addition, a 3.0 quake was centered 11 miles east of Pine Valley in San Diego County.
"It was a pretty long jolt," said Sharon Courmousis, owner of Sacred Rocks RV Park in Boulevard, an East County community which she estimates is 20 to 30 miles from the quake's epicenter. "We've had a lot of aftershocks but no damage. I was sitting in my RV. It really rolled us, but nothing jolted off its pedestal."
June 14, 2010 (Lakeside) –It was a scene worthy of Elmer Fudd hunting down "wascally wabbits" -- only this time, the hunters were the rascals.
San Diego Sheriff’s ASTREA 3 helicopter was struck by a laser around 10:03 p.m. last night while flying over Lakeside. The chopper crew located two boys, ages 15 and 12, near Idyl Drive and Lakeview Grenada Drive and notified Sheriff's deputies. Under questioning, the youths admitted that they had targeted the helicopter at least twenty times while hunting rabbits with bows and arrows.
June 14, 2010 (Alpine) – Yesenia Mitre, 25, has been arrested and will be charged with driving under the influence, according to the CHP. Mitre was the driver of a car that pulled out in front of a Viejas Fire truck, causing a collision on Willows Road/Old Highway 80 in Alpine at 5:42 yesterday morning. Several firefighters and the Mitre were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

June 14, 2010 (San Diego) – Back in February 2009, East County Magazine published claims by electrical transmission expert Ed Clark, who contended that faulty power line installations caused the Paradise, Witch and Cedar Fires. Clark and two other experts consulted by ECM contended that SDG&E installations of two down-guy wires connected by a single bolt were dangerous.
Clark, who has headed up power line installations for Southern California Edison and served as an expert witness for SDG&E, argued that SDG&E's installations were also illegal, violating a state rule requiring 12 inches of separation on poles. He provided evidence of arcing including charred, black marks on anchor bolts at the base of the pole where the 2003 Paradise fire began.
June 14, 2010 (El Cajon) – A frightening ordeal was experienced by party-goers at a home located in the 300 block of Sunnybrook Lane in El Cajon’s unincorporated area. Last night at 11:15 p.m., several men entered the residence armed with handguns and tasers. The host and guests were tied up with zip ties and duct tape; some victims were tasered when thieves demanded cash and jewelry.
June 14, 2010 (El Cajon) -- Cindi Fargo has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the El Cajon Community Development Corporation, CDC Board of Directors Chairman John McTighe announced. Fargo was selected from over 60 candidates in a nationwide search that was launched after long-time President/CEO Claire Carpenter announced her departure in December of last year.
June 13, 2010 (Otay Mesa) – David Victor William Ogison of Ontario, Canada died June 10th after his parasail apparently collapsed and he crashed into a ravine in the Otay Lakes/Jamul area, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office reports.
June 13, 2010 (Bonita) – Rodolfo Leal, 47, of Bonita died yesterday from injuries sustained in an accident on Otay Mesa Road at Britannica Boulevard. Leal was driving a red Toyota Corolla sedan westbound on Otay Mesa Road (SR-905) at 2:48 a.m. when he lost control, veered off the roadway and struck a light standard.
June 13, 2010 (City Heights) – A 2K fun walk will be held Saturday to promote refugee awareness and senior fitness, followed by the Somali Family Service Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the City Heights Community Park, 3795 Fairmount Avenue. Savor ethnic food and entertainment, meet healthcare providers and local refugee/immigrant and nonprofit organizations, and hear from prominent speakers including Mayor Jerry Sanders, Congresswoman Susan Davis, and City Councilmember Todd Gloria.
Committee's objectivity called into question amid Reagan name proposal
June 13, 2010 (Alpine) – A naming committee for the Grossmont Union High School District’s 12th high school in Alpine has been disbanded by the GUHSD governing board.
“Among other items, our Board clearly heard the request for a community survey, and was reminded that the Bond language included the new high school in Alpine serving both the Alpine and Blossom Valley areas,” Gary Schwartzwald, director of adult education and special projects, wrote in an e-mail to parents in Alpine.
June 13, 2010 (El Cajon ) – A 50 to 75-foot-high geyser of water spewed skyward in El Cajon on Friday morning, visible from as far away as Interstate 8. The gusher resulted from a hit-and-run driver whose truck backed into a fire hydrant on Taft Street, just south of East Main Street.
June 13, 2010 (San Diego) -- The San Diego Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a consumer warning about potential investment scams by companies supposedly involved in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill cleanup. Some companies touting their role in the cleanup efforts may be legitimate, while others could be nothing more than bogus clean-up operations designed only to clean-out unsuspecting investors, said the BBB.
June 13, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – What could be more inspiring than a concert in a nature preserve? Pomerado Brass Quintet performs today at 2 p.m. in the Mission Trails Regional Park’s visitor ampitheater.
The concert will feature light classical music, popular favorites and patriotic songs. A reception in the visitor center gallery will follow.

June 12, 2010 (Borrego) – Two earthquakes measuring 4.9 and 4.5 on the Richter scale struck less than a minute apart tonight. The temblors were centered nine and ten miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs, near Julian in San Diego’s East County.
June 12, 2010 (Spring Valley) – Some might call it cheeky to hoist a British flag inside an American sports bar where other patrons are rooting for Team USA in game two of the World Cup soccer tournament. But for Santee resident Tom Middleton, watching the big match at Cali Comfort in Spring Valley today, sporting a Union Jack and cheering for the Brits seemed the patriotic thing to do.
“I’m from England,” said Middleton, a Cox Communications employee who has been living in Santee for the past 16 years.

June 12, 2010 (El Cajon) – Our hats are off to the class of 2010!
On Tuesday, June 22, and Wednesday, June 23, 2010 5,258 senior students from nine comprehensive high schools, two charter high schools and three alternative high schools in the Grossmont Union High School District will don caps and gowns for commencement services. The District will also honor 20 valedictorians as well as 13 salutatorians for high academic achievements.

June 11, 2010 (Sacramento) - The California State Senate unanimously passed Assembly Concurrent Resolution 131, which grants historic designation to the portion of Highway 94 from Jamacha Road in Rancho San Diego to the junction with Historic Route 80. Authored by Assemblyman Joel Anderson (R-El Cajon), the Resolution previously passed the Assembly and is now law.
June 10 (Santee) - Tuesday evening (June 8) was the night that many baseball fans eagerly waited for: the Major League debut of Washington Nationals' pitching ace Stephen Strasburg, an alum of West Hills High School and San Diego State University.
Fans got what they hoped for and more as Strasburg's performance lived up to the hype that preceded it. Nationals Ballpark in Washington D.C. was sold out with 40,315 in attendance to see the Nationals play the Pittsburgh Pirates and witness what may prove to be one of the team's historic moments.
A look at Strasburg's statistics shows a game of dominance and efficiency. Over seven complete innings, he struck out 14 batters, gave up no walks and threw only 94 pitches, 65 of them for strikes. His velocity reached 100 MPH, but a healthy dose of off-speed pitches kept Pirates hitters off balance for much of the game.
San Miguel Fire District has voted 4-2 against putting a ballot measure on the ballot to reduce the number of board members from seven to five. Members Clark and Jackson voted in favor; Johnston, Augustine, Rickards and Winters voted against. Board member Brainard was absent. Clark, Winter and Augustine have seats up for reelection this fall.
Chief August Ghio said the board weighed information from its attorney, an impassioned plea from a member of the public who spoke against reducing the board, and impacts on the board’s ability to serve the public in making its decision.
June 11, 2010 (San Diego) -- I strongly believe in approaching every movie I review with as neutral an attitude as possible, with no preconceived notions as to whether or not I will like it. The A-Team made it simultaneously difficult and easy. It was difficult in the sense that I’m a huge fan of the original series and easy in that the show was not a work of art. The episodes followed a strict formula and contained mindless action, yet it worked because it was entertaining, energetic, and fun. This movie works because it follows in that same spirit that made the show fun to watch.
