January 21, 2022 (San Diego) - The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency is continuing to expand regional COVID-19 testing to meet the increased demand brought on by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. The County has a network of free testing sites, both walk-up and appointment-based.
January 21, 2022 (Lemon Grove) — The Lemon Grove City Council moved forward with several key agenda items on Tuesday at their first meeting of the new year.
January 21, 2022 (El Cajon) – A Chula Vista man, 42, driving a 2020 Dodge Challenger eastbound on Willow Glen Drive in unincorporated El Cajon yesterday at 9:21 a.m. missed a curve and went off the edge of the roadway. His vehicle struck a rock and a tree, ejecting the driver.
California Highway Patrol units and fire personnel arrived on scene shortly after the crash.

January 21, 2022 (La Mesa) – In an ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in local government, La Mesa City Council adopted a new public comment policy for City Council, Boards, and Commissions meetings. Currently, these meetings are held virtually, but the new policy preserves remote access to these meetings when in-person sessions return.
January 19, 2022 (El Cajon) -- Despite a statewide mask mandate that was declared on December 15 and extended until February 15, Mayor Bill Wells as well as Councilmembers Michelle Metschel and Phil Ortiz, did not wear their masks at the January 11, City Council meeting. Councilmember Steve Goble removed his mask when he made comments.

January 19, 2022 (San Diego) - When the nation’s high court effectively forbade union representatives from accessing fields and orchards to recruit workers last June, the United Farm Workers union turned to Sacramento for help.
January 19, 2022 (Reno) - The Aztec women’s basketball team (9-9, 3-4) lost at Nevada (12-4, 4-0) 58-46 Wednesday evening. SDSU shot 50 percent from three but couldn’t overcome poor free throw shooting and turnover issues which led to a season low 46 points.
January 19, 2022 (Sacramento -- The State of California is launching a new program that will pay college students $10,000 to volunteer doing public service work for a year.
Announced on Tuesday, some 6,500 students will be able to join the new Californians for All College Corps and will be required to put in 450 service hours, working on issues such as COVID-19 recovery, climate change and education.
Josh Fryday, chief service officer for the state, said it's a way to help low-income students afford college, earn credits and gain valuable work experience.

January 19, 2022 (San Diego) - While the city wrestles with creating a new police review board, the current board, tasked with “holding the fort,” is having a “difficult and stressful” time managing the workload of incoming police cases they need to review.
January 19, 2022 (La Mesa) - Do we need permission? These days it is often touted to give yourself permission to move forward. A lot of people may think the whole plot of this play is hooey. As Nike’s slogan says, "Just Do It." But there is also such a thing as respecting others.
Lamplighters Theatre is presenting "The Cocktail Hour," a play written by A.R. Gurney. The play is based on Gurney and his family, a technique not uncommon in playwrights. The story is set in the northeast United States, many decades ago, with a somewhat affluent white family.

January 19, 2022 (El Cajon) - Elaine Harvey, an artist and resident of El Cajon, California, has won the Best of Theme award in the continuingly competitive January 2022 San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) Member’s exhibition “The New Purple is Black”, an in-gallery show of the SDWS at 2825 Dewey Road in Liberty Station, San Diego, CA. Newman’s painting entitled “Returning Light” was selected by prominent local artist and juror Linda Doll for this honor, out of 220 entries. Doll said of the painting, “This painting has energy, with both subtle color and brilliant color, it has the movement of butterflies or of fireflies. There is always something moving, making it an energetic piece. It is definitely a beautiful painting.”
January 19, 2022 (San Diego) – Sheriff Bill Gore today announced that he will retire effective February 3 after 51 years in law enforcement, nearly a year before his term of office would have ended in January 2023. Gore was appointed Sheriff in 2009 to fill a vacancy left by the retirement of Bill Kolender, later winning elections three times.

January 18, 2022 (San Diego) - COVID-19 hospitalizations among California’s children — especially those too young to go to school — are the highest they have been since the pandemic began.
January 17, 2022 (Washington D.C.) – Over 850,000 Americans have died of COVID-19. But many families don’t know about a federal program that can pay for funeral expenses such as burial or cremation.
The program will pay up to $9,000 per death, or a maximum of $35,000 per application if an applicant paid for funerals for multiple people.
January 16, 2022 (San Diego) – California homeowners who have fallen behind on housing payments due to pandemic-related hardships can now apply for help to pay back payments through the California Mortgage Relief program, which is funded by the 2021 federal American Rescue plan Act’s Homeowners Assistance Fund. Qualified applicants do not have to repay any funds awarded.

January 16. 2022 (San Diego) - Rabbi Jason Nevarez of Congregation Beth Israel in San Diego attended college with the rabbi who was taken hostage in Colleyville, Texas. After college, they were classmates at the Hebrew Union College seminary in Jerusalem in 2001 during the height of the Intifada.

January 15, 2022(San Diego) – Public Watchdogs, a nonprofit advocacy group, is expressing deep concern for the public’s safety regarding the 3.6 Million pounds of deadly radioactive nuclear waste stored on the beach at San Onofre just north of San Diego, 108 feet from the Pacific Ocean, in a USGS designated tsunami inundation zone.
A tsunami advisory was issued earlier today for the entire West Coast including San Diego after an underwater volcano erupted near Tonga in the South Pacific. Although San Diego fortunately did not have flooding, the eruption did trigger a tsunami and flooding that hit parts of northern California including Santa Clara and other coastal communities, submerging cars and ripping boats loose from moorings.
January 15, 2022 (Spring Valley) – County planners invite Spring Valley residents to a virtual community meeting on Wednesday, January 26 at 6 p.m. The County is preparing a Climate Action Plan Update to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated from activities within the unincorporated county areas under State laws.

January 15, 2022 (San Diego) – On January 26 at 9 a.m., County Supervisors will hold a public hearing on a proposal to exempt county-owned, run or leased emergency shelters, transitional and supportive services form zoning ordinance provisions.
Update 6 p.m.: The National Weather Service now advises that tsunami waves could continue through this evening. This is a fluid situation due to continuing volcanic activity near Tonga. Dangerous surf conditions will be present through the weekend, due to both the tsunami concerns and rain/storm conditions. Avoid coastal areas.
Update 2 p.m. - The tsunami alert has been cancelled for San Diego's coast.
Update 12:09 p.m. -- The tsunami alert is still in effect, despite an earlier warning of waves due earlier this a.m., CNN reports, due to continuing volcanic activity at T onga. January 15, 2022 (San Diego) -- A Tsunami Advisory has been issued for Southern California including the San Diego coast this morning. A volcanic eruption near Tongain the South Pacific has generated a Tsunami.
The coastal areas of SD County and the rest of the U.S. West Coast could experience strong currents that may be hazardous to swimmers, boats and coastal structures. Move off beach and out of harbors, and do not go to the coast to watch due to tsunami danger.View vi
January 14, 2022 (Spring Valley) – Today, the San Diego Sheriff announced arrest of a third suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Jordan Amon Farmer, who was shot and killed December 10, 2021 in his apartment in the 8900 block of Delrose Avenue, Spring Valley
Homicide detectives identified three suspects: Jazmin Holdren, 25, Didesisi Franklin,27, and Andre L. Ford, 29.
Ford, who was already in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correction Center in San Diego, was arrested January 11, 2022 and charged with Farmer’s murder. He has been booked into San Diego Central Jail.
January 14, 2022 (San Diego) – The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) today announced that residents and visitors may notice a low-flying aircraft over the Imperial Valley, Salton Sea and surrounding areas in southern California starting as early as mid-January 2022 and continuing into Spring 2023.
