August 23, 2010 (La Mesa) -- The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD, a public agency that supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County, has selected nine recipients for its 2010 Health Tech Careers scholarships. The students, who are currently pursuing medical field jobs in positions often defined as technicians, applied for the scholarships by submitting an essay on “Where I will be in my career five years from now.”

Four students received $2,000 each. They included Jeremy Brown, Dawn Culver and Karla Klistof, all three of whom are studying to become licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) at Grossmont Adult School’s Health Occupations Center (HOC) in Santee; and, Pedro Ramos, a student at the Pima Medical Institute in Chula Vista who wants to become a respiratory therapist. Brown, a Lakeside resident, said his goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing within the next five years. Culver, a Lemon Grove resident, said she wants to become a registered nurse in honor or her late daughter Kristin, who died at age 27 in October 2008 from Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Klistof, a San Carlos resident, wants to eventually become a nurse practitioner. Ramos, a Lakeside resident, said he became interested in medicine after serving in the U.S. Army.

In addition, five other scholarship applicants received $500 apiece, including: Pima Medical Institute’s Pat Bradford and HOC’s Carolyn Farquar-Speed , both of whom want to become pharmacy technicians; Tony Lam, a future respiratory therapist who is a student at the Pima Medical Institute; and, Dexter Dionio and Tanisha Holmes, both of whom are studying to become LVNs at HOC.

The tax-supported District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in San Diego's East County. For more information about GHD, visit www.grossmonthealthcare.org.
