Each year, the AMN Healthcare-sponsored scholarship is awarded to the high school or college student who best exemplifies excellence in his/her pursuit of a career in healthcare. Elser was presented with a $1,500 check by Marcia Faller, AMN Healthcare Chief Clinical Officer and Senior Vice President of Operations, at HCC's "Finest Awards," held April 19, 2012, at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa.
"Andrea Elser is an excellent example of the innovative approach new graduates can bring to the healthcare industry," said Susan Salka, AMN
Healthcare's president and CEO. Salka pointed to Elser's focused commitment, community involvement and passion for her chosen field as elements that set her apart from the competition. "This is our ninth year in recognizing and rewarding individuals who have demonstrated a passion for healthcare and want to contribute to the field in a meaningful way," said Salka.
As a student, Elser has held internships at several mental health agencies, including Sharp Mesa Vista, San Diego Youth Services and the County
Department of Mental Health. She is editor of the school yearbook, treasurer for the Invisible Children Student Club, a school ambassador and a student athlete, excelling in basketball, volleyball and track. Despite her heavy schedule, Elser has managed to complete more than 20 units of community college coursework, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is ranked first in her class of 126 students and plans to attend the University of California, Berkeley in the fall.
The theme of the 2012 scholarship essay contest was "Why I Plan to Enter the Field of Health Care after College Graduation." Applicants were asked to submit an essay on the topic and obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher or other mentor.
Dr. Ian Pumpian, CEO and President of Health Sciences High School, provided a colorful personal recommendation, not only highlighting the resume of a committed student, but describing Elser as a personable, caring, confident young woman who inspires others to make a difference.
