December 12, 2011 (San Diego) -- La Maestra is preparing for its 19th Annual Holiday Toy & Gift Drive. Each December, La Maestra Community Health Centers and La Maestra Foundation partner to collect and distribute gifts to low-income families in communities, including nutritious food, household items, clothing and toys.

Beautiful Noble fir trees and Paul Ecke poinsettias will be sold in November and December to raise funds for La Maestra Foundation's community development programs and pre-orders are being taken now.

The Holiday giveaway events will take place December 19 – 22, at the five main clinic sites (in City Heights, El Cajon, Lemon Grove and National City).

La Maestra staff and volunteers distribute the gifts collected to local families at each of the clinic sites throughout San Diego. In 2010, La Maestra staff distributed toys, food and gifts to over 4,900 families.

Help make the Holidays brighter for families by supporting La Maestra’s Annual Holiday Toy & Gift Drive. Host a collection box at your business or holiday party where staff and visitors can donate unwrapped, new and gently used toys, kids’ books, clothing and non-perishable food. A decorated box can be brought to you and La Maestra staff will pick up the donations when full.

La Maestra has been providing services and programs available to all low-income residents in the community it serves. Many of its patients are immigrants and refugees, many of whom are in the country legally and were forced to leave their native countries due to conflict or other upheaval. Services provided are medical care, dental care, job- training, housing assistance, insurance eligibility, and a food pantry.

Established in1991, La Maestra strives to build a strong team of staff and physicians, many of whom have been with the organization since its inception.  The population served is low-income - 99% and below the federal poverty line, 98% are uninsured. There are 145 employees representing 19 languages and cultures and there are 91,351 patient visits per year (more than 350 per day).

The residents it serves are from the communities of City Heights (Central San Diego), El Cajon (East San Diego County) and National City (South San Diego County).

Any support you can provide will be appreciated and donations of new or very good condition toys, books, clothing, household items and healthy food are welcome; as well as, tax-deductible cash contributions. Please help make La Maestra's Holiday Drive a success.
