May 27, 2016 (Phoenix) - After that embarrassing sweep by the Giants, the Padres got a much-needed day off before they headed to Phoenix to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Arizona, as we all know, is Andy Green’s old stomping grounds and he was happy to be back.  Christian Friedrich started on the hill for San Diego against Robbie Ray for Arizona.

Something we never thought would happen again happened in the first inning:  the Padres opened the scoring.  With runners on first and second, Melvin Upton Jr. singled and drove in a run to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Jon Jay doubled and Wil Myers hit a single to drive him home and the Padres went up 2-0.

In the fifth, Matt Kemp hit his 11th home run of the year, a solo shot to center and the Padres took a 3-0 lead.  Immediately afterwards, Yangervis Solarte hit another solo homer and the Padres led 4-0 on back-to-back home runs.  Derek Norris hit a two-run homer, the third of the inning for San Diego and the Padres took a 6-0 lead.

In the sixth, Solarte hit another home run, this time blowing the game open by scoring three runs and the Padres led 9-0.  This is now Solarte’s second multi-homer game of his career.  He has three homers in his last six at-bats.  Norris hit a line drive double to center to drive in Upton Jr. and the Padres’ lead went to double digits, 10-0.  I wasn't sure if I was watching a Padres game either.

As punishment for the stupid decision by the Padres to take out Friedrich during a shutout and putting in Keith Hessler, Brandon Drury hit a two-run homer in the eighth to take away the shutout and give the Padres an eight run lead, 10-2.

Jake Lamb hit a two-out solo homer in the ninth to make the score 10-3, but that was all the snakes could muster and the Padres take game one in a commanding way.

Game two is tomorrow night at 7:10.  Lopsided pitching matchup:  the rookie Cesar Vargas against the veteran Zack Greinke.
