July 6, 2010 (Lemon Grove) – The City of Lemon Grove has issued a proclamation declaring July 10th “Pride Day at Your Lemon Grove Library.” Ron deHarte, emcee of the Pride Celebration, was the victim of a hate crime that occurred in Lemon Grove last summer while participating in an equal rights torch relay that passed through Lemon Grove.

Lemon Grove Councilmember George Gastil presented San Diego County library officials, organizers, and local residents with an official proclamation signed by Mayor Mary Teresa Sessom and Councilmembers Jerry Selby and George Gastil. The presentation recognized the Lemon Grove Library's efforts to commemorate the community's history of courage, spirit, achievement and civil rights activism. During the presentation, rush hour passersby witnessed rainbow flags swaying in the wind as the proclamation was presented at the iconic Lemon at Main Street and Broadway in Lemon Grove.

Councilmember George Gastil called the event “very significant,” adding, "It's the first time that we're having an LGBT oriented event in the County Library and we are honored to have it in Lemon Grove. It's also very important because it's the first time that we've had several council members sign something together for LGBT Pride."

The Lemon Grove library, located at 8073 Broadway, Lemon Grove, will host the Pride Celebration on July 10 from 12-3 p.m. The free festival celebrates local literature, music, and dance while also raising awareness about San Diego's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities and related legislation efforts.

The Pride Festival will feature nine popular authors, including Robert Heylmun, Eric Shanower, Walter G. Meyer, and Linda Patterson. Speeches by Sally M. Hall about the online news hub www.thatssogaylive.com along with other civil rights activists will be heard in between performances by singer/songwriters Mary Dolan and Lisa Sanders, the hip-hop themed Kruciaal Element Dancers, and the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus Ensemble.

Librarian Jennifer Teitelbaum, the event's organizer said, "We will have four authors hosting a table. There will be community booths, free food, henna tattoos, health screenings and ticket giveaways for Comic-Con and the San Diego Padres. It's going to be a wonderful event. I'm so thankful to the community and the County Library for supporting this activity. The Library's mission is to educate, inform and inspire and I truly believe that is what this event is doing for the community of Lemon Grove as well as the LGBT community. It's going to be a big event."

Gastil, who is married with children, has long been a supporter of equal rights for all, including those in the LGTB community. "We are really proud that July 10 will be Pride Day for our Lemon Grove Library," he said.  "It's the first time this event has ever happened. I really think it will be a successful event and I think that we will probably do it every year."
