May 28, 2016 (San Diego) - The Padres announced today that the New York Mets have acquired first baseman James Loney from the team for cash considerations, MLB Trade Rumors reports.

Loney was playing decent AAA ball with the El Paso Chihuahuas, batting .342/.373/.424.  He has previously played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.  His power has dwindled; he used to be a 10-15 home runs a season hitter.  Last season with the Rays, he only hit four.  His fielding has regressed as well.

The Mets were in need of a first baseman after losing Lucas Duda to a stress fracture in his back.  The bulk of Loney's $88 million salary will be paid by the Rays, who signed him to a three-year deal before 2014 and released him in early April.
