GOVERNOR PROPOSES TERMINATION OF WELFARE-TO-WORK AND DRASTIC CUTS IN SERVICES FOR SENIORS, DISABLED, & CHILDREN

Majority Vote Budget Initiative qualifies for ballot

How would you balance the budget? Take the Next10 budget challenge

By Miriam Raftery

May 14, 2010 (Sacramento) – Facing a budget deficit of over $20 billion, today Governor Schwarzenegger proposed deep new budget cuts.  The Governor proposes the complete elimination of the CAL-Works program (which will impact over 80,000 low-income parents and their children in San Diego County), slash in-home care for seniors and the disabled (including 23,000 seniors and disabled persons in San Diego County), and sharply cut funds for the Healthy Families program, among other drastic measures.

Hoping to end budget gridlock, teachers, firefighters and nurses last week joined together to submit more than 1.1 million signatures and qualify a Majority Vote Budget Initiative for the November 2, 2010 election.  “Late budgets hurt all Californians and the budget crisis is continuing to be the top issue in the state,” said Kay McVay, President Emeritus of the California Nurses Association, “This initiative will not end all of the gridlock, but it is a step in the right direction.”

HOLLINGSWORTH BILL TO REDUCE PENSIONS FOR STATE WORKERS IS HEARD IN COMMITTEE

By Miriam Raftery
May 10, 2010 (Sacramento) – Senator Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta) whose district includes most of East County, had a hearing in the Senate Public Employees and Retirement Today on his Senate Bill 919. The measure would increase retirement age from 55 to 65 and require higher contributions from state employees to their retirement accounts. It would also require that retirement benefits be based on the highest three years of wages, instead of the highest one year.

The measure, which would reduce pension benefits while asking workers to pay more into their pension funds, has sparked controversy in Sacramento, drawing opposition from teachers and other state workers.

GULF OIL SPILL REIGNITES QUESTION OF OFFSHORE DRILLING IN CALIFORNIA

Federal and state candidates, office-holders from our region wade into the fray

By Lola Sherman

ECM Editor Miriam Raftery also contributed to this story

May 6, 2010 (San Diego) --To drill or not to drill is a question that voters may weigh more heavily following the disastrous explosion April 20 on a British Petroleum oil rig off the Louisiana coast.

“Drill baby, drill” is still former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's mantra, even though her state suffered one of the worst oil spills in history. But in California, some elected officials and candidates now say they’ve changed their minds about oil drilling off our state’s shorelines in the wake of the Gulf Coast disaster.

MICHELLE OBAMA VISITS FARM; MOST FARMERS NOT INVITED

By Chris Morrow, freelance journalist/CNN iReporter
April 14, 2010 (City Heights) --Residents of City Heights who spend hours daily tending the garden Michelle Obama visited today wished they had been part of the moment.
Hundreds of guests attended to meet the First Lady as she toured the New Roots Community Farm, but only three of the community growers were invited as she walked through their garden.

Many of the growers watched in their homes across the street. It was a time of happiness to have the First Lady visit the farm and also a time of sadness to not be included.

DEMOCRATS TAKE AIM AT SUPERVISOR RON ROBERTS’ SEAT

April 14, 2010 (San Diego) – All five members of the San Diego Board of Supervisors are conservative Republicans, including Supervisor Ron Roberts, who has held office for nearly 20 years. Though incumbents’ seats are generally considered safe barring a scandal, Roberts may be vulnerable due to changing demographics in his district and a formidable pack of Democratic candidates running for his seat. In fact, the Fourth Supervisorial District now has a hefty majority of 127,000 registered Democrats and only 87,000 registered Republicans, as well as 67,000 who decline to state party affiliation.

Four Democrats say that Roberts has lost touch with his constituents and has failed to represent the needs of families, working people, the poor, and the middle class. Democrats vying to replace Roberts are Shelia Jackson, president of the San Diego Unified School Board, Juan del Rio, affordable housing advocate, journalist/community activist Steve Whitburn, and retired teacher Margaret Moody.

CONSUMER ADVOCATES CHARGE INSURANCE-BACKED PROPOSITION 17 IS DECEPTIVE

April 8, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – Consumer advocates and major newspapers across the state are warning voters about deceptive arguments for a ballot measure, Proposition 17, backed by an insurance company. Mercury Corp. paid roughly $2.2 million for a professional signature gathering service to qualify the measure for the ballot and was responsible for 98% of funding for the “Yes on 17” campaign.

The Los Angeles Times observes that the initiative “would legalize practices Mercury has been fined for.” State regulators fined the insurer for violating Proposition 103, California’s landmark consumer protection law, by inappropriately cancelling policies and limiting access to preferable policies and rates.

FPPC FINES LAKESIDE FIREFIGHTERS PAC FOR LATE FILINGS; LARGE DONATIONS, GAPS IN RECORDS RAISE QUESTIONS

April 8, 2010 (Lakeside) -- The California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) today announced it is issuing a $400 fine against the Lakeside Firefighters Political Action Committee (PAC) and John Hisaw, the committee’s treasurer, for failing to file two semi-annual campaign statements in a timely manner with the San Diego County Registrar of Voters in 2008 and 2009. Two filings appear to have never been turned in.

The amounts raised and funneled into campaigns to elect two union members, Jim Bingham and Nicholas Johnson, to the Lakeside Fire Board have raised eyebrows recently. Both members are now facing a recall election launched by Lakeside citizens angry at the pair for voting to fire Lakeside Fire Chief Mark Baker.

WHITE SUPREMACIST TOM METZGER RUNS FOR CONGRESS--AGAIN

By Miriam Raftery

March 30, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – Tom Metzger, a white supremacist and former Fallbrook resident who previously ran for Congress in San Diego County, is now running again—this time as an Republican write-in candidate in Warsaw, Indiana.  Metzer is a former grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan.

Metzger shocked local Democrats in 1980, when he won a three-way Democratic primary. Democratic party leaders condemned the racist views of Metzger and endorsed Republican Claire Burgener. Burgener won with an unprecedented 86% of the vote. Metzger later ran for U.S. Senate as an independent and has since joined the Republican Party.
