March 28, 2014 (Santee)--Hundreds of students in the City of Santee will be lacing up their sneakers and securing their bicycle helmets on Tuesday, April 22nd in celebration of the first ever citywide Walk to School Day.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safe routes for walking and bicycling, and promote physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, and reduced traffic congestion near schools. This year, the City of Santee Walk to School Day shares April 22nd with Earth Day, emphasizing the program goals and a healthier environment.
This is the first time the City of Santee has dedicated a citywide day to walking and bicycling to school.
Schools participating and organizing events in Walk to School Day include Carlton Oaks Elementary, Chet F Harritt Elementary, Hill Creek Elementary, PRIDE Academy, Rio Seco Elementary and Sycamore Canyon Elementary. At each school, the event will begin off campus at a ‘Park and Walk’ location with children, their families and community leaders walking together to school in celebration. All other Santee neighborhood schools are promoting Walk to School Day and promoting healthy lifestyles, a cleaner environment and decreased traffic congestion.
The event is being organized by the City of Santee and WalkSanDiego as part of the Santee Walks & Rolls to School program, which will develop a citywide Safe Routes to School Plan that identifies improvements for enhancing pedestrian safety around all schools in the City. Over the past six months, the Program has hosted multiple community Safe Routes to School workshops to identify walking and biking barriers around Santee schools. A final Safe Routes to School Community Workshop will be hosted from 6:00-7:30pm on Tuesday, April 1st at the Santee Public Library. All are invited to help identify walking and biking barriers around your school.
