July 16, 2016 (San Diego) - The Padres looked to capitalize on the momentum from beating the Giants for the first time this season last night.  Jeff Samardzija took the mound against Luis Perdomo.

Just like last night, the Padres got things started early against a veteran pitcher.  Travis Jankowski scored on a bad throw by Buster Posey in the first to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.  Yangervis Solarte singled, scoring Wil Myers and the Padres went up 2-0.

They kept going in the second.  Ryan Schimpf homered to extend the lead to 3-0.

That nice lead was cut to one real quick with Angel Pagan’s two-run homer in the third and the Padres led 3-2.

Matt Kemp got the Padres back out in front by two with a solo homer in the Padres' half of the third and the Padres led 4-2.  Schimpf tripled and drove in Alex Dickerson and the Pads went up 5-2.

Posey got a run back for the Giants in the fifth with a line drive double to score Denard Span and make the score 5-3 and chase Perdomo out of the game to be relieved by recently called up Buddy Baumann.

After Carlos Villaneuva was brought in the sixth, Mac Williamson blasted a solo shot to left for the Giants' second homer of the night and the Padres' lead was once again narrowed to one, 5-4.  This time, the Padres weren't so lucky.  Ramiro Pena knocked another solo shot, this time to right and back-to-back Giants home runs tied the game at 5.

And so we got bonus baseball in San Diego.  But not for long as Posey hit a leadoff solo home run in the 10th that gave the Giants a 6-5 win.

Or did they?   We went to the bottom of the 10th.  The Padres got base runners on second and third and left the rest of the job to Adam Rosales, who grounded through the hole to tie the game at 6 and handed Santiago Casilla his fifth blown save.   In return for the blown save, Casilla decided to give the Padres another gift:  a balk that brought a run home and the Padres dodged about 10 bullets to take game two 7-6 and the series, regardless of what happens tomorrow.

The Padres will try for a sweep in tomorrow's matinee at 1:40 p.m.  All Star Johnny Cueto will take the mound for San Francisco against Edwin Jackson.
